Psalms 8:9 (NIV) – LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Majestic suggests awesomeness, power, domineering and fearful. Majestic suggests towering and powerfully overwhelming. Majestic suggests royalty and its accompanying force and authority. Majestic suggests attracting reverence.
Majestic cannot be associated with ordinary and cheap. Majestic cannot be associated with low class. Majestic is at a high level. Majestic is opposite, separate and distinct from weak, incompetent, unqualified and average.
In Psalm eight, the first and last verse, the Bible emphasizes that God, our God is majestic. In between the Psalmist gives his evidence of the majesty of God. It is completely opposite of what we expected of His Majesty!
How does a majestic God silence His enemies? Majesty suggests mighty show of power. Military force. But our God, shows majesty in silencing enemies, by using the helpless infants. This is what it means to be majestic!
Psalms 8:2 (NIV) – Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.
Earthly majesty would silence enemies using show of force. Our God who is majestic addresses enemies in a manner that seems so weak. In weakness of His servants, God shows majesty.
When the weak emerge successful in unprecedented ways, glory goes to God. When the weak who were obvious losers suddenly become unexpected winners, we see the majesty of God. Weakness doesn’t limit nor stop our God.
2 Corinthians 12:8-10 (NIV) – 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. ” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
God shows His majesty in weakness. Others show majesty by projecting fears and mighty power. God projects what seems like weakness and in it great power. Jesus, God the Son, is born in poverty, in a manger and lives an ordinary life. In what seems to be a child born in poverty and weakness, is actually God amongst us the eternally powerful. In that weakness of poverty God shows that weakness doesn’t limit His majesty.
God’s servants are sometimes not very wealthy, not much education or having earthly respected accolades. God’s servants struggle with many things daily and they almost seem miserable, yet in them, God demonstrates His power! When God and His people seem weak, helpless and desperate, that is when they are strongest.
In the ignored son of Jesse God chose David to be the best king of Israel. In slaves like Joseph, God chose a top tier ruler of Egypt. In slaves like Daniel and friends, God showed His power in Babylon. God is majestic because even in weakness, His power is shown. God empowers the weak and least expected people to do His will.
When Jesus chose disciples, He chose the lowly people like fishermen, ordinary and uneducated people. Characters who wouldn’t command respect. Yet through them the gospel is still moving around the world, two thousand years later. This is what it means to be majestic! Empowering the weak.
Psalms 8:3-8 (NIV) – 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? 5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
God created a powerful world. A world that is wonderful and attractive. Then God creates human beings who are lower than angels. Then He assigns these who are lower than angels to run His world. Why didn’t He assign angels? The Psalmist wonders – what is mankind that you are mindful of them? Why the weak mankind? Why should they run your beautiful wonderful world? Why do you pick the weakest who are lower? That is what it means to be majestic! Empowering the weakest is majesty.
God in His majesty doesn’t abuse and misuse the weak, He instead empowers them. God in His majesty raises us up to positions we don’t deserve. God teaches us that if we have any majesty, we should use it to empower others. If you are above others, don’t harass and frustrate them, no, lift them up.
Our majesty if any shouldn’t be used to create fear in people. Our majesty if any should make the worthless feel worthy. How are you using your financial majesty, academic majesty, so to speak? Are the weak and lowly around you uplifted or harassed and demeaned? God is majestic because He raises us up from weakness to strength and to positions we don’t deserve.
Are you weak, our majestic God can use you to do great things. Do you feel unqualified? God will do things through you that the qualified can’t do. In His majesty, our God takes care of our deficiencies so that our weaknesses becomes unprecedented strength. May God make our weaknesses to be the winning point, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
