Proverbs 3:24
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
New Living Translation
You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly.
Contemporary English Version
you will rest without a worry and sleep soundly.
Good News Translation
You will not be afraid when you go to bed, and you will sleep soundly through the night.
Not everyone enjoys their sleep. Some struggle to fall asleep. Some keep waking up at night. Some have nightmares that make sleeping scary. Not all sleep is sweet.
Those who sleep hungry have no sweet sleep. Those who sleep angry have no sweet sleep. Those who sleep worried cannot have sweet sleep. Those who are stressed and depressed cannot have sweet sleep. Those who are sick cannot have sweet sleep!
If you take care of a sick loved one who you have to keep checking on, you can’t have sweet sleep. If you fear that thieves will break in or witches moving outside will bewitch you, you can’t have sweet sleep. If you fear that tomorrow is worse than today you can’t have sweet sleep!
Clearly, not everyone who goes to bed and wakes up has enjoyed their sleep. To have sweet sleep is a privilege very few enjoy. One of the reasons we should pray before going to bed is to pray for sweet sleep.
Psalms 127:2
In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.
Daily struggles for survival cause many to rise up early against their wishes. How can you sleep longer if that means you will suffer need? You wake up early against your wish because of survival. Staying up late in search of income, pleasure, etc., is a struggle for survival. As survival is denying many people sweet sleep, God grants sweet sleep to those He loves.
In our text today there is a promise of sweet sleep. If holy inspired scripture promises sweet sleep, that is guaranteed and we should go for it. In our world where many people don’t enjoy their sleep, this offer is the best ever. How do we get this sweet sleep that the Bible promises?
The chapter of consideration today tells us that if we trust the LORD and have God-given wisdom in our life, we will live in safety, Proverbs 3:23, and you will not stumble or make costly mistakes. When night comes, we will enjoy sweet sleep that others find elusive.
Two things, trust in God. Be sure that God will have His way. Knowing that even when it seems failure is coming, God will not fail. Trusting God is the first. Secondly is having and applying wisdom that comes from God. Live wisely. Do not be gullible and naive. These two are the recipe for sweet sleep.
If you have challenges sleeping well, pray that God enables you to fully trust Him. If you have challenges sleeping well pray that God gives you the wisdom to navigate life so that you evade failures and mistakes that haunt you to bed. God can grant both ingredients in the recipe for sweet sleep. May God grant it to us in Jesus’ name, Amen!
