3 John 1:3-4
(3) It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it. (4) I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
To be a people-pleasing person is a wrong trait to have in life. People pleasing means you will go out of your way to please others so that they can favor you. People pleasers will betray others. People pleasers will lie about others. People pleasers will feel guilty for doing the right thing that did not please others. People pleasers will never act in their own interest but that of others first. People pleasers will go out of their way and even embarrass themselves in order to catch the attention of those they want to please.
We need to pray that God saves us from people-pleasing traits. People pleasers will never speak in defense of anyone if it offends those they wish to please. People pleasers will change sides quickly if a new set of people they need to please show up. People pleasers deceive those they please by acting as if they are loyal. People pleasers are the sycophants who mislead leaders by false allegiance. Society would be a better place if people pleasers did not exist!
People pleasing is different from living a life that makes others happy about you. People pleasing have intentions to deceive others into being pleased. People pleasers have an audience they are performing for. Those who love their lives have God and nobody else as the audience.
Apostle John tells the church that he has received reports that have given him great joy. He says some random believers came and testified about the faith of the church. If random unknown people can testify about your faith you are blessed. When we live according to our faith, it brings joy to all people.
People are glad to find one person who lives according to the faith. It is rare to find faithful people in a world full of hypocrites. To be observed by many and conclude you are faithful, is a great achievement.
Apostle John says the believers even reported that this church is not only faithful, but they continue to walk in the truth. What they are saying is that people prefer and are overjoyed by consistent faith as opposed to a once in a while act of faithfulness. What will make people happy about us is a consistent life of faithfulness that is observed even when we do not know someone is observing. Are you consistently faithful? This will really make people happy about you.
Apostle John speaks as a parent and on behalf of all parents. He says there is no greater joy than to know that his children are walking in the truth. He was speaking as a church leader to church members. He was elderly and the church members were his spiritual children. However, it is also true that all parents are greatly overjoyed by the good news about their children.
If you are ever troublesome and giving your parents sleepless nights, you are murdering them. It will be hypocritical to cry at their funeral after hurting them all their lives in dangerous living. If your parents must always be worried about you and concerned about your present and future, you are a bad person, you need salvation!
As parents age they are fragile and they only wish to receive good news about their children. Now that you are an adult, ensure that your parents only receive good news about you. Show them that you can handle the difficulties of life. Do not express the helplessness and seek their sympathy, that hurts them and kills them. Show that you are equal to the challenges of life. Do not keep reporting anything and everything to aging parents. Protect them from the frustrations of your life. Take those frustrations to professionals and to the Lord in prayer.
According to Apostle John’s inspired word, parents will greatly be overjoyed to know that we are walking in the truth. Parents want to know you live a life that pleases God. Parents want to know that you have a friendship with God and He will save you and guide you in life when no one else can’t. Parents are glad to know you are committed to that which is good and right. Parents are totally pleased if they know we practice what the church preaches.
We should live such lives not intentionally to please our parents, but because it is our preferred way of life. We should do it for God’s sake through God’s power. The by-product of such a life is that people will be pleased and parents will be overjoyed!
May we live lives that bring glory to God. May we live lives that when observed remotely and reported it will make people happy about us. May we live lives that will make parents overjoyed. May this be possible in Jesus’s name, Amen!
