We Desperately Need This Cloud and Fire!

Numbers 9:16-18 (NIV) – 16 That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. 18 At the LORD’s command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp.

The Tabernacle was the place of worship that God asked Moses and the Israelites to make. The Tabernacle was also known as the Sanctuary or the Temple. While Israelites were at the wilderness, traveling from Egypt to Canaan, the Tabernacle was a mobile tent structure.

The Bible tells us today that above the Tabernacle during the day was a huge cloud, visible to everyone in the Israelite camp. At night that cloud became a pillar of fire and everyone could see it. God used that cloud during the day and that pillar of fire during the night, to guide Israelites. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

When the cloud lifted up and moved, everyone knew God was asking them to move out of that place. People would march and follow the cloud during the day and the pillar of fire during the night. When the cloud stopped and settled, the whole camp of Israelites stopped and settled. God’s will on when to stop and when to move was made very clear through that cloud during the day and the pillar of fire during the night. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

Numbers 9:21-23 (Message Bible) – 21  If the Cloud stayed only from sunset to daybreak and then lifted at daybreak, they marched. Night or day, it made no difference—when the Cloud lifted, they marched. 22  It made no difference whether the Cloud hovered over The Dwelling for two days or a month or a year, as long as the Cloud was there, they were there. And when the Cloud went up, they got up and marched. 23  They camped at God’s command and they marched at God’s command. They lived obediently by God’s orders as delivered by Moses.

The movement of Israelites did not depend on how tired they were. The movement of Israelites did not depend on what the people thought about an area they had settled in. It was completely depended on whether the cloud and fire moved or settled. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

God was the final decision maker. Sometimes they settled  for a few days, sometimes for a long time, it all depended on how God moved the cloud and fire. The leaders’ opinion didn’t matter. The people’s opinion didn’t matter. God was final and through that cloud and fire they knew His will to move or settle. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

The could by day and fire by night was visible to everyone. God’s will should be known by everyone. No one depended on another to know the will of God. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

The will of God as written in the Bible is very clear and available for everyone to know. It’s as clear as a cloud by day and fire by night. Read the Bible and know the will of God and act accordingly. Through written and spoken sermons and teachings, God makes His will as clear as a cloud by day and a fire by night. We have clear guidance.

Whatever we do we should act according to the will of God. What does God want us to do? Move or settle? God reveals His will through the cloud by day and fire by night. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

Exodus 14:19-20 (NIV) – 19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.

As Israelites crossed the Red Sea, the cloud and fire moved behind them as security. It separated them from the pursuing Egyptian army. The cloud and fire brought light to Israelites and darkness to Egyptians. They were safe because the cloud and fire was between them and their enemies. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

We still have enemies even today. Enemies who act as friends but want to destroy us. Enemies who are hostile. All types of enemies. Enemies within the family and those outside. May God place this cloud and fire between us and our enemies as He did for Israelites. May this cloud and fire give light to us, but throw our enemies into total darkness. We desperately need this cloud and fire!

May the will of God in all matters be as clear to us, as the cloud and fire was clear to everyone in Israel. May we like Israelites be willing to obey without questioning. If it moved they moved. If it stopped, they stopped. No questions just obedience to the will of God revealed in the cloud and fire. We desperately need this cloud and fire!
