Matthew 2:12
And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
Matthew 2:13
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
Matthew 2:19
After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
Wiseman from the East also known as the Magi saw a guiding star and they came to look for the newborn king. They made inquiries at Herod’s palace but Herod had no idea that a king had been born. Herod felt threatened and also consulted further but got no answers. Herod then struck a deal with the wise men that if they find the child they will return to Herod and inform him.
The wise men followed the guiding star until they found the new born Jesus. They worshipped Jesus. They gave gifts to Jesus and were very glad.
The wisemen got a dream that clearly instructed them not to go back to Herod. That meant they break the deal they had with Herod. If you enter into a bad deal, then discover it is wrong, you have a right to go no further. Break bad deals. Do not fulfill bad promises.
Do not keep a promise to go and sin, do not apologize. Be like the wisemen. Once the divine influenced dream became clear, they abandoned their deal with Herod and left by another route. Learn to outwit your tempters and temptress. Change you contacts, block them or relocate your residence. It is foolish to go back to sin or temptation to cancel the deal you had. Come to your senses and disappear wisely!
After the wisemen left through dream guidance, Joseph had another dream. This is not the first time Joseph is having a dream guidance.
Matthew 1:19-20
(19) Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
(20) But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Joseph discovered Mary his fiancée was expectant before the wedding and he wasn’t responsible. Joseph decided to quietly abandon the wedding plans without embarrassing Mary. A very good man. If a loved one betrays you, manage your anger and live to see another love life. Do not be angry and kill a loved one who betrayed you, It is not wise. The best revenge is to move on and have another successful relationship without the betrayer. Manage your anger when heartbroken. Walk away from the source of anger.
As Joseph considered leaving Mary, God sent him a dream advising him not to leave Mary. Joseph obeyed the dream and married Mary. Joseph shelved his feelings to obey God. Joseph’s opinions and feelings were not as important as God’s word. May God’s word be more important to us than our own opinions and feelings.
In our text today, Joseph is told in another dream to immediately leave for Egypt with Mary and Jesus. He is told in the dream that Herod will seek to kill Jesus. Joseph obeys and leaves at night for Egypt. Night to avoid detection. Night for safety. Even when God sends you, you need strategy, tact and wisdom. When God sends you, you don’t act carelessly. Be smart while serving God or obeying Him.
After Herod died and the danger against Jesus gone, Joseph got another dream asking Him to return Home. Joseph obeyed and returned home. Joseph was so obedient and stayed in Egypt until he was advised to leave. Joseph did not use his rationalization when God’s word was yet to be clear. God through a dream guided Joseph and his family back home.
Don’t we need this kind of Dreams in our lives? Dreams from God that guide us away from danger. Dreams from God to show us the right decisions to make. Dreams from God to assure us when it is safe to make a move. We need this kind of Dreams urgently!
Dreams and visions are not the same. Visions happen when we are carried away to spiritual realms and shown God’s will. Visions can happen anywhere anytime. You don’t have to be asleep to get a vision. Dreams only happen while we are asleep.
Daydreaming is when your thoughts drift and you think about what makes you happy or sad. Daydreaming also means being unrealistic in our perception and hopes. Daydreaming is not really dreaming but that moment when we seem distracted from the present reality by thoughts. Our focus today is on dreaming and not daydreaming.
We all dream at night when we sleep. We have several dreams according to experts. The dreams are normal as the brain reorganizes the previous day and plans for the next day. Generally we shouldn’t worry nor take the Dreams too seriously.
Dreams can be influenced by our deep seated fears. Fears we have pushed to the background of our mind. The brain pulls them out and brings them in a scary way. Sometimes we wonder where such a dream came from. It’s our mind reorganizing our fears. Such dreams are best eliminated by facing our fears, acting on them or leaving them in God’s hands. Fears of breakup, fears of loss, fears of failure, etc. Such fears suppressed in the mind will emerge as scary unexplainable dreams.
Dreams can also be a result of eating heavy and late at night. Such dreams are scary. Such dreams are best eliminated by eating early and light or not eating at all in the evening.
Other dreams are a result of demonic activities seeking to frustrate our lives. Dreams that leave us worried and disturbed for days on end. Dreams that keep recurring and jeopardizing our peace. Such dreams end instantly when we pray against them and begin habits of evening worship before sleeping. Pray specifically against such dreams and in the name of Jesus they will never return!
However, their are Dreams that are God given to guide us. Dreams to warn us. Dreams to prepare us for the next move. Dreams from God don’t leave us confused whether it is from God. All Bible dreamers were not confused and worried if this is from God. If you are confused and worried, it is not from God. God cannot fail to make Himself clear. God doesn’t leave us scared and restless. Scared and restless after a dream? That is not from God.
When God guides you as He guided Joseph of Old Testament, wisemen and Joseph of New Testament, it is clear and doubt free. Nebuchadnezzar was worried about the meaning and that he had forgotten the dream. When he was reminded the dream and given the meaning, he was at peace.
Dreams from God have straightforward sensible interpretation. Joseph interpreted dreams of his fellow prisoners and dreams of Pharaoh in a simple straightforward manner. If the interpretation is not simple and straightforward it is wrong.
These dreams from God that guide us what to do and where to go and where not to go are the dreams we need. May God provide us with timely Dreams in our lives in Jesus’ name, Amen!

Do I have a part to play for God to communicate to me in dreams?
Hebrews 1:1 God speaks in many and various ways. You cant tell God how He should communicate to you. He communicates as He pleases. Our part is to remain in a close relationship with God and He will keep communicating with us.
When Gideon asked for a sign from God, He was asking for assurance. Moses also asked for assurance that God will be with him. Otherwise, God communicates as He pleases…
