Hebrews 8:9 (NIV) – 9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.
Hebrews chapter eight tells us about covenants God made with His people. It tells us in verse nine that there was an old covenant that God made when He took the people by hand and led them out of Egypt. When Israelites left Egypt for Canaan, the Bible tells us that God was taking them out by hand. From this hint we get lessons on what happens when God holds your hand to lead you.
The ten plagues of Egypt culminated in Israelites leaving Egypt. The ten plagues had scary moments for Israelites but also moments of confidence. When God leads you by hand, there may still be scary moments. When you feel scared, it’s not the absence of God. He is still present leading you!
By the time Israelites left Egypt, God had made decisive victory over Egyptians. When God leads us by hand, it will end in decisive victory against His enemies. There will be no doubt on who is on God’s side!
When Israelites reached the Red Sea they had doubts on how to proceed. Moses told them to trust God. The Red Sea opened and they walked across. When God leads us by hand, we may have moments of doubt because from the human perspective we have reached a dead end, cul-de-sac. At such moments we must just trust God. At such moments victory will suddenly come to those who trust God amidst the fog of unclear way forward. When God leads us by hand, it may seem unclear but we won’t fail.
Red Sea moment is the same as when the storm almost overwhelmed the boat in which Jesus was sleeping. Then suddenly God averts the disaster. When God leads us by hand, there will be such moments of almost failure, almost disaster, almost death, then victory comes to those who trust Him.
When God leads you by hand and you meet moments of doubt, follow instructions from the following quote. This quote was hang in our home throughout my childhood. My sisters and I had crammed it. Many years later it makes sense. It is by Ellen G White.
“The Lord wants His people in these days to believe that He will do as great things for them as He did for the children of Israel in their journey from Egypt to Canaan … in the most difficult experiences. “Go forward” is the command of God to His people.” 9T 271.2
When God leads you by hand- just go forward. God’s command is that we go forward. When you know the direction God wants you to go, and doubts come, do this, GO FORWARD! When God leads you, that is the command.
Go forward take medication. Go forward take the exam. Go forward and start the project. Go forward to school. Go forward reconcile and forgive. When God leads you by hand, and moments of doubt arise, follow this command, GO FORWARD!
When Israelites were in the wilderness, there were moments they lacked water. When God leads you by hand, you may lack this or that temporarily. Do not doubt the presence of God. He will provide! What is lacking will not disadvantage you. What is lacking will not kill you. When God leads you by hand, you may experience lack, but at the right time, He will provide!
The message is clear. When God leads us, victory is guaranteed, but, there will be many scary moments. There will be moments of doubt. There will be moments of lack. However, in the end, God never fails, we will emerge victorious.
May God lead us by hand today and always. May we remain trusting through moments that are scary, doubtful and when we temporarily lack. May we emerge victorious in the end, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
