Exodus 4:31
and they believed. And when they heard that the LORD was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.
Aaron was on the way from Egypt to Midian to look for his brother Moses. Moses was on the way from Midian to Egypt to get the Israelites out as God instructed. Moses and Aaron met on the way. Together they went to Egypt.
When Aaron and Moses arrived in Egypt, they first met the Israelites and their leaders before going to Pharaoh. They wanted to first convince Israelites and their leaders to agree with God’s plan. Moses and Aaron met the Israelites and their leaders. The Israelite leaders and the whole community unanimously agreed with God’s plan to save them from Egypt.
What captures our attention today is that after they believed and accepted God’s plan of salvation, they took note that God was concerned about them. The Bible tells us that when they heard that God was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped. They responded to God’s goodness to them. They responded to the fact that God had shown them concern. They responded to the fact that God had seen their misery. When they heard that God was concerned and seeing, they responded.
Wouldn’t it be rude and unacceptable to be indifferent to God’s goodness? That the Almighty God has shown you kindness and concern and you have not responded in any way? That God has expressed concern over what you are going through and you do not respond in any way? You move on as usual as if it is your right? You don’t respond as if God owed you that Concern? God sees your misery and you do not respond? Are you suggesting you could have fixed the misery yourself?
How did they respond to God’s concern? How did they respond to God taking note of their misery? The Bible tells us that they bowed down and worshiped. They did not plan a worship service, it was a reflex action. There is authenticity if it is a reflex response to God’s goodness. The moment they heard and understood that God was concerned and had seen their misery, they bowed and worshiped. They did not choose a committee to determine how to respond, they responded instantly. How have you responded to God’s goodness to you?
When you learn that God loves you and cares about the small and big things in your life, how do you respond? When the preacher clarifies that God is as concerned about your loneliness as you are concerned, how do you respond? When you read that God is concerned about your low income, how do you respond? When it is clear that God is concerned about your academic performance, how do you respond? God cares about your health, what is your response?
Exodus 15:19-20
(19) When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. (20) Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing.
When God saved Israel from the Egyptians, Israel responded by singing and dancing immediately. They did not go to think about how to respond, they acted on reflex. It is authentic when it is instant. For all that God has done for you, what is your response? Are you still thinking of how to respond? Are you really grateful?
When your favorite sports team wins, do you retreat and form a committee to plan how to respond to that victory? Don’t you immediately jump up and down in excitement? When God’s goodness is expressed to you, how do you respond? When responding to victory no one is conservative or liberal, everyone gets excited the same way. When it comes to responding to God’s goodness, some are conservative and others are liberal, really?
We should respond to God’s goodness by giving. We should respond to God’s goodness by worship. We should respond to God’s goodness by singing praises. We should respond to God’s goodness by shouting praises and honor to God. We should respond to God’s goodness in an instant to show we understand and appreciate the moment. When they heard, they responded, what about you? May God help us to respond in authentic ways that bring glory to Him, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
