Acts 7:21 – When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.
Acts 7:22 – Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
Acts 7:29 – When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.
Acts 7:30 – “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.
Acts 7:35 – “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Acts 7:36 – He led them out of Egypt and performed wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the wilderness.
To second guess is to try and predict what someone will say or do. To second guess is trying to guess the plans being made by someone or the actions they are about to take or words they are about to speak. You can’t second guess God!
If you know someone very well you can almost accurately second guess them based on their regular predictable patterns of doing things. You can guess how someone will respond to a question. You can predict how a person will react to something. You can second guess a person you have known well. For God it’s different. You can’t second guess God!
You may have known God by reading scripture. You may have known God by a personal experience of walking with God. You may have listened to testimonies on how God worked in the lives of others, but all that is not enough to know His thoughts and actions. You can’t second guess God!
God has observed Israelites increase in number in Egypt. God has observed them suffering under Egyptians. God needs to send a deliverer in the next few years. How will God select the deliverer? Which family will be lucky to raise the deliverer? What curriculum will the deliverer study? You can’t second guess God!
God did the unexpected. God caused Moses the deliverer to be born when Egyptians were killing Israelite children. No one could guess such a dangerous timing. You can’t second guess God!
God did the unexpected thing. Moses the deliverer was raised in Pharaoh’s palace. What? Yes in Pharaoh’s palace. The Israelite deliverer from Egyptian slavery was brought up, nourished and kept safe by the chief Egyptian leader, the king, the Pharaoh. The oppressor brought up the person who will oppose him. Who could have guessed this? You can’t second guess God!
In our human thinking a deliverer needed to be brought deep in the slums of Israelites dwelling. The deliverer needed to be indoctrinated with anti-Egyptian feelings and beliefs. According to us, to have a deliverer in Egyptian palace is risky. The deliverer may fall in love with Egyptian way of life and abandon us. How can we trust a deliverer who has been brought up by the chief oppressor? He knows the oppressor more than he knows us whose he will deliver. Yet that is what God chose to do to Moses the deliverer. You can’t second guess God!
Moses the Israelite deliverer from Egyptian bondage was thoroughly educated in everything Egyptian. Shouldn’t he have been educated in everything Israelite? Yet God is His mysterious ways, educates him in Egyptian ways. You can’t second guess God!
Moses makes a mistake and runs away from Egypt to a far land in Midian. Moses stays out of touch for forty years. The deliverer is out of touch with Israelites for forty years. The deliverer knows nothing about Egypt for forty years. Don’t we humanly think that such a deliverer would fail to connect and succeed? Yet God chose this Egyptian raised, Egyptian educated and forty years out of touch guy to be the deliverer. You can’t second guess God!
For the forty years in Midian, Moses wasn’t studying or gaining relevant experience in slave management. He was just taking care of sheep and raising his family. He had zero plans to go back to Egypt. He had no passion to go back to Egypt and save Israelites. No vision and no passion. Yet God chose him to be the deliverer. By human standards Moses was totally unqualified and incompetent for this job. He had no passion nor drive. Yet God chose him. You can’t second guess God!
Before Moses fled from Egypt to Midian, Israelites had already rejected him as a leader. They doubted his genuineness in leading Israelites, because he had become more Egyptian than Israelite. God chose this leader that they doubted and rejected to be their leader out of Egypt. You can’t second guess God.
For the record, Moses succeeded in leading Israelites out of Egypt. Humanly speaking he was going to fail. But God knew something we didn’t know and chose him. You can’t second guess God!
Isaiah 55:8 – “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.
Isaiah 55:9 – “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
In simple terms, God is telling us that we can’t second guess Him. God sees better than us. God knows more than us. God is wiser than us. God is more strategic than us. We can’t second guess God!
Who knew the Saviour of the world would be born in a manger in abject poverty, yet this is God coming human flesh! We expected royalty pomp and color, but what we got was a humble poor boy. Jesus did come nor look like the Messiah people had in mind. You can’t second guess God!
When Cain killed Abel, we expect God to be very angry and kill him instantly. God instead forgives Cain and protects him from revenge. You can’t second guess God!
The prodigal son didn’t expect to be welcomed home by the father he had offended. He thought the father would still be angry and put him under punishment of being a hireling. But the father couldn’t be second guessed. He gave the prodigal son a heroes welcome yet the guy was no hero. You can’t second guess God!
Jonah 4:11 – And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
Jonah tried second guessing God. He failed. God was also concerned about animals in Nineveh, in addition to innocent people. You can’t second guess God!
Are you waiting on God? You can’t second guess God and say that you are praying and nothing is happening. What you expect to happen may not be what God is doing. Just trust God even when you don’t see the evidence. You can’t second guess God!
You can’t look around with human ability to see what God is doing so that you have hope. God could be acting in your favor from a place you least expect. You can’t second guess God!
You are waiting for one of the twelve disciples to be the Evangelist per excellence, then God picks a persecutor and makes him great. Apostle Paul emerges from where you least expected. You can’t second guess God!
Are you praying for school fees and looking at bursaries, scholarships and some rich relatives? You can’t second guess God. Are you looking for a life partner and scanning your local church and neighboring churches? You can’t second guess God. It could be someone you ignore and interact with daily. You can’t second guess God!
Let us trust God even when we don’t see answers coming. Prayers with no evidence of God answering prayer doesn’t mean God isn’t acting to help us. Our problem is second guessing God then panicking when we don’t see answers we thought about. May we trust God even when there is no answer in sight. May God help us to stop second guessing Him. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
