Exodus 8:6 – So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land.
Exodus 8:7 – But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
Exodus 8:18 – But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not. Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere,
Exodus 8:19 – the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD had said.
Magicians of Egypt could perform some miracles. Like Moses their sticks became snakes. Like Moses who produced frogs, they too could produce frogs. They too performed miracles. They didn’t believe in God but they performed miracles.
Miracles don’t mean you belong to God. Magicians of Egypt produced miracles without God’s power. Miracles could come from magic and evil forces. If all you need is a miracle, any magician and person with evil powers can grant you a legitimate miracle.
If you need to follow a miracle worker, you may follow a magician or someone using evil forces. Miracles do not obviously lead to God. Miracles are more likely to mislead.
There are miracles the Egyptian magicians couldn’t perform. They immediately acknowledged that God was greater than them. But miracles called plagues, by Moses and Aaron did not convince Pharaoh and his people to get converted. Miracles are not enough to facilitate conversion!
There is a misleading sensational desire for miracles. Believers who are seeking miracles as evidence of the presence of God. Believers who think God can only manifest Himself through a miracle.
A miracle is an act that happens in reality without following the normal order and process of things. Healing needs medication and time, but miraculous healing is instant, no medication and need for prolonged time. In normal order of things, we can’t walk on water, but in miraculous circumstances Jesus and Peter walk on water without sinking.
Jesus performed many miracles during His earthly ministry. The miracles of Jesus are recorded in the Bible. Jesus remains the greatest miracle worker of all time.
Mark 16:17 – And these signs WILL ACCOMPANY those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
Mark 16:18 – they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
Miraculous work will not be the main feature of the disciples of Jesus. Miraculous work will not be the attraction point. Disciples of Jesus will not be identified by the miracles they perform. The Bible says, the miraculous signs will accompany them.
Will accompany means it will happen in the course of their preaching and teaching. Will accompany means it will not be the main feature. Will accompany means God will decide when it happens and when it doesn’t happen.
Will accompany means the ability will be available when needed. Will accompany means there means it will not be the main feature of their ministry. Disciples will not perform miracles on demand but as need arises and God wills.
The ministry of Jesus was accompanied by miracles. Jesus did not invite people to come and see a miracle. Jesus did not perform miracles as a main feature of His ministry. Jesus performed miracles as need arose along His preaching and teaching.
Matthew 12:38 – Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
Matthew 12:39 – He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
Jesus refused to perform miracles on demand. Jesus refused to make miracles the believing point for His ministry. He refused to perform a miracle for religious leaders who demanded a miracle.
Jesus said the search for a miracle is for a wicked and adulterous generation. Those who seek a miracle in order to believe are evil people and will not be saved. They don’t need a miracle! Jesus refused to perform a miracle for them!
Revelation 13:13 – And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people.
Revelation 13:14 – Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.
Revelation 16:13 – Then I saw three impure spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
Revelation 16:14 – They are demonic spirits that perform signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty.
The book of Revelation tells us that at the end of time, Satan will use great miracles to deceive the world and lead people to oppose the will of God. Miracles will attract people and lead them to be deceived. If all you need and are looking for is a miracle, you are at a risk of being given a miracle by Satan and being misled forever!
1 Corinthians 12:7 – Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:8 – To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
1 Corinthians 12:9 – to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
1 Corinthians 12:10 – to another MIRACULOUS POWERS, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
Apostle Paul tells the Corinthians that gifts of the Spirit or manifestations of the Spirit are given to all believers, but not all believers have the same gift. That is why use see the wording “to another…” The gift you have may not be the gift I have. Ability to perform miracles or even speak in tongues or prophesy is given to some but not to all. Therefore it’s unbiblical to expect everyone to perform miracles. Not all are gifted by God to perform miracles!
On the other hand fruit of the Spirit is expected of all believers. Everyone who is converted to Jesus Christ must have the entire list of the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Not even one should be missing!
Galatians 5:22 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Galatians 5:23 – gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
John 13:35 – By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Everyone will identify true followers of Jesus by the fruit of the Spirit in their personal lives. Their love for one another. If you preach the solid undiluted biblical truth but you have endless wrangles among yourselves, you are not converted. No amount of preaching the gospel will make you legit followers of Jesus if you steal and scheme against each other. Love for one another that is seen and not pronounced is what counts!
Everyone will identify true Disciples of Jesus by the fruit of the Spirit and not by miracles. Miracles didn’t convert Pharaoh and his team and it will not convert anyone today. Jesus said the demand for miracles isn’t God driven. No one will be saved because of a miracle.
Hebrews 11:6 – And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Faith is believing without evidence. Demanding a miracle is demanding evidence, therefore it’s not faith. Promising and offering a miracle is providing evidence, therefore it’s not faith. Our relationship with God requires faith, believing without evidence. Without faith it is impossible to please God!
Dear God, save us from the unhealthy desire for miracles. Save us from searching miracles because we may end up visiting magicians who use evil powers to perform miracles, though they call themselves prayer experts. May we trust and believe in You without evidence, and may miracles accompany our faith at your own time. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
