Song of Songs 3:1-2
(1) All night long on my bed
I looked for the one my heart loves;
I looked for him but did not find him.
(2) I will get up now and go about the city,
through its streets and squares;
I will search for the one my heart loves.
So I looked for him but did not find him.
This inspired book of the Bible tells us about the reality of human love even before we start reading the interpreted meaning of love between Christ and the church. Human love was created in us by God. The desires we have for each other is God-made. The satisfaction we find in being loved is God-made. The admiration we have for each other and the handsomeness and beauty we see is God made. The pointing out at body parts that attract us and expression of love poetically is God made.
Genesis 2:22-23
(22) Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
(23) The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man. ”
Love songs are not a result of sin, never! Before sin came into the world, Adam sang a love song to Eve upon seeing her for the first time. Attempts to silence the expression of love are contrary to what God created. Love is expressed in the sweetest personal way. It is not secular to express love. The book Song of Songs is an expression of love between a man and a woman. We shouldn’t be so uncomfortable with that reality that we start saying it has a deeper meaning of God-loving people. It is true God loves people, but human love is equally true and real.
We should enjoy reading the book Song of Songs as an inspired book that shows the sweetness of human love as created by God. Let us enjoy how these two love each other and speak to and of each other. Let us pray that we too have the same love experience or even better.
The reason why it is weird to only interpret this as God’s love for humanity is that we are denying the reality and sweetness of human love which God created. We are insinuating that the expression of human love is so sinful that it can’t be inspired by God. We are implying that to love is to sin and we should rise above loving and being loved. The worst of all is that we will find it impossible to interpret certain passages of the book if we strictly relate it to God’s love only. The worst of all is that such a school of thought is allegorical and it is an abhorred method of interpretation for evangelicals and most protestants.
Our text today tells us that the lady is waiting and looking for the one she loves. She resorts to waiting all night long on her bed but he didn’t show up. What do you do when a method you are using fails? What do you do when your approach to love matters fails? What do you do when your attitude keeps driving people away? What do you do when your health tricks aren’t working? What do you do when whatever you are doing is not working?
In our text today we find an answer to what to do when one method isn’t working. When the lady realized that her waiting in bed was in vain, the next text tells us that she decide to get up and go looking for her love. If one method is not working change strategy. Doing the same things and expecting different results is insanity. Change what you are doing and you will get different results.
If your method of parenting is not producing a good child, change the method before you lose the child. If your approach has not guaranteed you love and happiness in that relationship, change how you do things. If you have tried changing someone else, which you shouldn’t, and it has not worked, change yourself and see the amazing results. If one method is not working switch to another one.
Don’t stay whining and crying that you have done everything and nothing is happening. That one method cannot be everything. Change the method. Learn to move on. The lady realized that her waiting bed will not work, therefore, she left that bed and went to look for the love of her life. She changed her method to one that works and she succeeded.
May God give us the wisdom to know what we need to change so that we can get better results in whatever we are doing. May our love life be as sweet as this one in the inspired book of Song of songs, may we love and be loved and express it as it is done in this book, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
