For This, God Has Promised A Great Reward

Luke 6:22 – Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

Luke 6:23 – “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because GREAT IS YOUR REWARD in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.

Luke 6:35 – But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then YOUR REWARD WILL BE GREAT, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Matthew 5:12 – Rejoice and be glad, because GREAT IS YOUR REWARD in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

When there is a reward for something, then that something must be very valuable and important to deserve a reward. To attach anything to a reward means it is more important than others. Governments are constantly looking for criminals to stop them, but when they attach a reward to a specific criminal they are looking for, that criminal is not ordinary. That criminal is of a higher priority than others.

When you lose something valuable, you announce and search. When you attach a reward to whoever helps you find it, it means this this not just valuable, it is very very valuable. A reward makes a difference.

When the reward is unusual higher, it catches attention of people. When there is competition for a reward, people get interested. When there is a very high reward, the interest goes higher and it becomes a news item. It becomes impossible to ignore a game with the highest reward.

There are many football contests, but the one with highest reward catches world attention. World Cup. World Boxing Championships. When the reward is higher for a criminal, attention is arrested. When a reward is higher for a lost item, attention of the public is arrested. A great reward highlights to everyone that, they should pay attention for this is unusually important.

Jesus is preaching many things and then suddenly He says that for this you will have a great reward. Not just a reward, but a great reward. Jesus is calling your attention to the importance of this thing. Great is your reward in heaven.

When Luke wrote the gospel by investigating the truth of what Jesus said and did, he did not that at this point of the sermon, Jesus talked of a great reward in heaven. He verified that Jesus promised a great reward in heaven for this. Great is your reward in heaven.

When Matthew wrote his gospel to persuade Jews that Jesus is the Messaiah, he also noted that at this point, Jesus talked of a great reward in heaven. Not just a reward but a great reward. Great is your reward in heaven.

If both Matthew and Luke wrote separately without influencing each other and confirmed that Jesus gave a great reward for this, then it means, this point was so significant it could not be lost to listeners over time and space. The book of Matthew was written by a Jew from probably Antioch Syria between AD 50 to AD 90. The book of Luke was written by Non-Jew and probably earlier than Matthew. Yet both books highlight that on this particular item, Jesus promised, not just a reward, but a great reward!

This great reward is only for those who will make it to heaven. This is because it will be given in heaven. Great is your reward in heaven. If you don’t qualify for this reward, you will not make it to heaven. If you miss this reward, you’ll be in hell fire destroyed eternally. Great is your reward in heaven!

This reward in both Matthew and Luke’s accounts is associated with how you respond to enemies who provoke you. When you don’t retaliate when enemies attack you, great is your reward in heaven. When you don’t hit back when enemies hit you, great is your reward in heaven. When you don’t give a rejoinder, great is your reward in heaven.

When you have an opportunity to revenge and you don’t, great is your reward in heaven. When you treat your enemy well, better than they treated you, great is your reward in heaven. This reward depends on how you treat your enemies who persecute you.

When you are hated and treated as evil, Jesus says rejoice, for great is your reward in heaven. When someone says, I hate you, be comforted, great is your reward in heaven. When it is obvious you are no longer loved and you are innocent before God, take heart, great is your reward in heaven.

When you are falsely accused and generally concluded that you are guilty, but you are not, cry if you must, but be comforted, for great is your reward in heaven. God sees the insults, hatred, persecution, punishments, mistreatment, etc., and He promises a great reward in heaven when we persevere. Great is your reward in heaven!

All these means that God is very interested in how we respond to provocations, attacks, insults and enemies harming us. God wants us to avoid revenge and retaliation. God wants us to avoid altercations. God wants us to let Him revenge. God wants us to respond to enemies by treating them better than they treated us. God prohibits us from tit for tat. For all these God promises not just a reward, but a great reward. Great is your reward in heaven.

The reward is to tell us this is very important for God. The reward tells us that God values this more than anything else. The reward calls our attention to this thing that is ver important to God. The reward is like saying, you can miss out on other things but not on this one. The reward therefore means, don’t ignore this. How you respond to enemies is of a great interest to God, respond as God says, for great is your reward in heaven.

Forgive your enemies, for great is your reward in heaven. Do not respond to enemies in the manner they confront and attack you, for great is your reward in heaven. Do not cut off your enemies from receiving any help and support from you, for great is your reward in heaven.

Treat and respond well to your enemies at school or at work, for great is your reward in heaven. Treat and respond well to your enemies at church, for great is your reward in heaven. Treat and respond well to your enemies at home, within the family, relatives, siblings, parents or even spouse and or children, for great is your reward in heaven.

How you treat others and respond to them, particularly enemies, is a litmus test. A litmus test of whether you are truly converted. A litmus test of whether you are under the control of the Holy Spirit. A litmus test of whether you will be in heaven or hell after this life. A litmus test of whether God should answer any of your prayers. If you treat and respond well to your enemies, great is your reward in heaven!

May God forgive me and help me to treat and respond well to my enemies. May I be a partaken of this great reward in heaven. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
