Galatians 4:9
But now that you know God—or rather are known by God —how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
In the past before salvation in Jesus, the gentiles worshipped gods that were powerless and whose priests demanded too much from the people. They were slaves to powerless systems that demanded too much and delivered nothing in return. How can you turn back to weak and miserable forces?
Israelites on their part were also stuck in a temple worship process of sacrificing animals. The process was hectic and demanding. Apostle Paul refers to it as an old covenant. The process was not friendly or encouraging. When Jesus came, He set them free from that cruel system and gave them and the rest of the world a new system. How can you turn back to weak and miserable forces?
The Galatian church had been converted to Jesus Christ. By coming to Jesus they had renounced the gentile gods. By coming to Jesus they had renounced the old Jewish system of sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins and embraced the call of Christ. However, after some time some people started preaching, teaching, and convincing them that there was still some value in the old Jewish way of sacrifices and its various demands. That is why Paul asks them this question. How can you turn back to weak and miserable forces?
Knowing God exposes you to the greatest power. With God nothing is impossible. With God, every promise is guaranteed. God can not even be compared to those miserable and weak forces that people relied on before Jesus came. Therefore, after knowing God, it is expected that you cannot even consider going back to the obviously weak and miserable forces. How can you turn back to weak and miserable forces?
Turning back to those weak and miserable forces is a clear sign that you do not know and relate with the all-powerful God. You cannot know and relate with a great God and then you go to a weak, miserable, and helpless god. Either you do not know that great God as you claim or you have challenges that affect your ability to comprehend. How can you turn back to weak and miserable forces?
God has saved us from many weak and miserable beliefs and powers. God has saved us from fear of witchcraft and procurement of its services. How can you turn back to such weak and miserable forces? God has saved us from the belief that dead people are alive somewhere. God has set us free from the fact that we had to maintain allegiance to dead people who in biblical reality are non-existent. How can you turn back to such weak and miserable forces?
God has saved us from drug abuse, alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, etc. How can you turn back to such weak and miserable forces for pleasure? God has saved us from a dangerous ex-friend. How can you go back to such a person who God saved you from? God saved you from careless behavior that exposed you to possible huge losses and death. How can you turn back to such weak and miserable forces?
You were so desperate and dependent on peers who misled you and wasted your precious opportunities. The peers had power over you. You needed their approval and favors. Then God saved you from peer pressure. How can you turn back to such weak and miserable forces?
Save me from these forces dear God. May I never turn back to such weak and miserable forces, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
