2 Samuel 7:3 – Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you.”
2 Samuel 7:4 – But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying:
2 Samuel 7:5 – “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?
David had settled down as a king over all Israel. David had built himself a beautiful palace. He was very comfortable. Then David calls Prophet Nathan and expresses a desire to build a temple for God. Nathan immediately agrees with David for that was a noble idea.
David and Nathan were both wrong. David wasn’t qualified to build the temple. Though it was a good idea, they were both wrong.
That night after David and Nathan had agreed that temple construction goes on, God appeared to Nathan according to 2 Samuel 7. God praised David and promised to bless him, but concluded that he is not the one to build the temple. God appointed David’s son, Solomon, to build the temple.
1 Chronicles 22:8 – But this word of the LORD came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and have fought many wars. You are not to build a house for my Name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight.
Later on in Chronicles, David reveals why God denied him temple construction. God said David had shed so much blood and wouldn’t be the right person to build the temple. This fact was lost to David and Nathan when they quickly agreed on building the temple.
When David and Nathan made a genuine unintentional mistake, God stepped in to avoid further damage, to clarify issues and to make His will clear. When we don’t understand that we are getting lost, God steps in to redirect us. God sent Nathan back to David to explain His will. God May send someone else and ours is to obey.
Genesis 20:6 – Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
Abimelech admired Sarah the wife to Abraham. Abraham lied to Abimelech by telling him that Sarah was his sister. Abimelech took Sarah to begin marriage with her. Abimelech was genuinely unintentionally mistaken to take Sarah as his wife. What did God do? God prevented Abimelech from consummating marriage with Sarah. Then God appeared to Abimelech at night and cautioned him from marrying Sarah and ordered him to take her back to Abraham. God told Abimelech to ask ask Abraham to pray for him.
When you are genuinely unintentionally mistaken (1) God will prevent you from sinning, and (2) God will ensure you know that you are on the wrong, and then (3) God will expect you to confess and repent all your sins including this one.
God has many ways to prevent you from sinning. You may lack money to facilitate sinning. You may be ditched last minute by your sinning partner. You may have the weather or nature interrupting. Anything can happen to prevent you from sinning. Praise God when you are prevented!
God will ensure you know that you are wrong. It can be in a church sermon. A clip on social media. Advice by a friend or stranger. God has no limitations in letting you know you are wrong.
The fact that it was genuinely unintentional doesn’t remove the fact that it was a mistake. Therefore repentance is mandatory. God forgives every repentant sinner.
Acts 16:6 – Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.
Acts 16:7 – When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.
Acts 16:8 – So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.
Acts 16:9 – During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
Apostles wanted to go and preach in certain territories but the Holy Spirit prevented them. It wasn’t God’s will for them. Their desire to go there was a genuinely unintentional mistake. God prevented them. Then using a dream at night, God gave them directions.
When you are genuinely unintentionally mistaken, God will prevent you from sinning any further. God has many ways of preventing you from sinning against Him. After that God gives you a direction on what He wants done.
May God prevent us from sinning through genuinely unintentional mistakes. May God clarify our way forward through whichever means He pleases. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
