Mark 8:5 (NIV) – “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied.
Jesus has compassion on the crowds that have been with Him for three days. Disciples suggest that the crowds should be sent away. Jesus refuses to send them away without feeding them. The disciples tell Jesus, there is no food of the crowd. Jesus asks them this question – how many loaves do you have?
The disciples confess that they have only seven loaves. Using the seven loaves, Jesus performed a miracle and it was enough to feed four thousand men, without counting the women and children who were present. The miracle began with the question – how many loaves do you have?
Mark 6:38 (NIV) – “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”
During the feeding of five thousand men, without counting women and children who were present, Jesus asked the same question. The disciples had just suggested that they did not have enough resources to feed that mammoth crowd. Jesus asked them this same question – how many loaves do you have?
What is your shortage? What is your deficiency? How many do you have, so that I know what you are lacking. I want to add to what you have, therefore tell me what you have. While feeding the four thousand, Jesus added to the seven loaves. While feeding the five thousand, Jesus added to the five loaves and two fish. Jesus wants to add to what you have. How many loaves do you have?
God wants to add to what you have in order to address your shortage. How many loaves do you have so that He can add to it? Do not feel embarrassed that you have an insignificant amount compared to the required amount. They had seven loaves for four thousand men! That was an embarrassing figure that no one in their right mind should have declared. But Jesus doesn’t mind your shortage, however embarrassing it is, He will add to it. How many loaves do you have?
You need school fees? How much do you have for fees now? Do not say you have nothing when you have one dollar. You need a life partner? Do not say you have no one yet you have people in your contacts list, though you don’t feel anything about them and you don’t talk, you can’t say you have nobody. Present what you have to God and He will make it more than enough! How many loaves do you have?
You need reconciliation? Don’t say it’s impossible when some rudimentary communication is still possible. Present it to God and He will make it more than enough! How many loaves do you have?
How are the vitals of your health? You can’t give up when there still is even a flicker of hope. Present it to God and He will make it more than enough! How many loaves do you have?
Exodus 4:1-2 (NIV) – 1 Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?” 2 Then the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied.
Moses pauses a problem to God. God responds by asking him – what is that in your hand? This question is the same as the question- how many loaves do you have? God wants to begin with what you have and move from there to greatness. How many loaves do you have?
Zechariah 4:10 (NIV) – “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”
Don’t despise anything small or little if it is in God’s hands. Zechariah warns the people against despising the Temple that Zerubabel was rebuilding. With the little he had he built. With the few resources he established. God promised to make the little Zerubabel’s temple to be a great temple. God promised that what was despised would be great. Just give God what you have and He will make it great! How many loaves do you have?
“In the harvest field now ripened (there is a work)
There is a work for all to do
Hark, the Master’s voice it’s calling
To the harvest, calling you
Does the place you’re called to labor
Seem so small and little known?
Well, it is great if God is in it
And He will not forsake His own
Little is much when God is in it
Labor not for wealth or fame
There’s a crown, and you can win it
If you go in Jesus name”
Little is much when God is in it. Give the little you have to God. Give God the inadequate loaves of bread for the multitude you must feed. God will make it sufficient. God will address that shortage. God will fix that deficiency. May God make our little to be much. May God multiply our loaves of bread. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
