Jeremiah 7:3 – This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.
Jeremiah chapter seven is like God reading the riot act. Reading the riot act is speaking in anger and warning someone of dire consequences if they don’t do the right thing immediately. That is exactly what God does to Judah and all of us in Jeremiah chapter seven. Read it for yourself in a version that is easy to understand.
God is so angry at the people of Judah and He threatens to evict them from the beautiful fertile land He gave them. God tells them that He has let they stay there and He can kick them out. God tells them and us that, He will let them stay if they reform their ways. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
God will let us stay in good health if we reform our ways. God will let us stay employed if we reform our ways. God will let us stay married if we reform our ways. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
God will let us pass exams if we reform our ways. God will let us succeed in business if we reform our ways. God will bless our relationships to become marriages if we reform our ways. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Whatever we are enjoying today is by God’s grace. It may not seem like God is involved, but He now declares His role. He is the one who lets us enjoy what we are enjoying. If we disappoint Him, He can bring bad luck and disaster to affect what we are enjoying. Therefore we either reform our ways or we stop enjoying and deal with bad luck and disasters. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
I will let you enjoy that car without costly breakdowns, if you reform your ways. I will let you enjoy that house with major repairs and thieves visiting, if you reform your ways. I will let you enjoy your hobbies, pass times and trips without costly mistakes, if you reform your ways. I will let you enjoy having friends and family, without disagreements and separation, if you reform your ways. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Jeremiah 7:16 – “So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you.
Our prayers for anything and everything will be answered if we reform our ways. God can easily get to a point where He refuses to listen to prayers from obstinate people. It will worse than bad luck if God ignores our prayers. What a disaster if our prayers are rejected even before we pray. To avoid rejected prayers we must reform our ways. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Jeremiah 7:5 – If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,
Jeremiah 7:6 – if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm,
Jeremiah 7:7 – then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your ancestors for ever and ever.
Reforming our ways entails changing our ways. Changing the way we treat each other. Changing the way we treat our parents, children, spouses, relatives, neighbors, work mates, school mates, church mates, etc. Treat people better and God will treat you better. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Change the way you treat the helpless. How do you treat orphans? How do you treat the poor? How do you treat the workers under you? Change the way you treat them. Treat them with honor and respect, that is what God demands. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Change the way you deal with competitors who threaten your job. Change the way you treat business competitors. Stop lying about people to create a basis of harming them. Stop scheming against people. Treat your real and imagined enemies well. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Have one God. Be faithful to God. Worship God. Do what God says. Study His words. Attend worship. Meet you financial obligations to God. These are the reforms He expects. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
God says a lot on how we treat each other. That means God keenly observes how we treat each other. God is interested in how you relate with everyone. God is interested in what you say to each other when angry and happy. God is interested in what you tell others about others. God is interested in how you nicely and fairly deal with each other. He wants change in this area and He wants it immediately. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
Last but not least God in a few words talks about our relationship to Himself. He desires that we become genuine worshippers. Do everything He asks us to do. That is the only way to avert bad luck and any other disasters. “Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place.”
I want to live in this place. I want a good life. May God help me to reform my ways. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
