Micah 4:7
I will make the lame my remnant,
those driven away a strong nation.
The LORD will rule over them in Mount Zion
from that day and forever.
During bible times, nations and kingdoms would attack each other. The winning nation would take people from the defeated nation or kingdom and then make them slaves. Slavery was forced labor. The form of transport of the captured people was trekking. Under such circumstances, the lame could not serve well in forced labor and they could not walk the expected long distances. Therefore every time any nation or kingdom was captured, those left behind were those who were physically challenged or disabled.
The lame or physically disabled people were also sometimes considered as cursed by God. Families would disassociate with them. They were treated as lesser human beings. Their families mistreated and ignored them. The invading country also ignored them. When people who could escape would escape, they would leave behind their disabled people and therefore exposing them to great danger.
Micah tells the Israelites that they will be punished because of their sins. Babylon will attack them. During the attack, some of them will run away and leave behind the lame as usual. During the attack, some of them would be captured. After the attack, the only people left behind would be the lame people. God says that these rejected lame people are the very ones He will use to make a new great nation of Israel. I will make the lame my remnant!
The lame who were useless to their own relatives. The lame who were sacrificed and exposed to danger as others escaped. The lame who even the Babylonians wouldn’t carry to captivity. The lame who were not considered a threat. I will make the lame my remnant!
The lame who were assumed to be so weak and challenged that if left behind the defeated nation would never arise. Those who were taken away were those who could never come together to revive the nation. Yet these lame people thought to be unable to come together to revive a nation are the ones God says, He will use to restore the Israelite nation. These ones who will never amount to anything that can be a nation according to their relatives and enemies are the nation God will form. I will make the lame my remnant!
Then God further says that the people captured and driven away to submission are the people who will form a strong nation. The captured are not strong that is why they were captured. the strong ran away or were killed as they fought back. Those driven away may not be able to return. These weak who seem to have no chance to return are the ones who according to God will form a strong nation. Those who are weak, will not just form a nation, but a strong nation.
What a mighty God we serve! No situation is ever written off before Him. It may seem permanent and irreversible but nothing is impossible with God. If God can make the lame to form a nation. If God can make the weak to form a strong nation. My situation and yours have not reached an extremity outside God’s ability.
Our finances may be lame and weak. Our relationships may be lame and weak. Our health may be lame and weak. Our academic work may be lame and weak. That which is lame and weak is God’s material for greatness. I will make the lame my remnant and those driven away a strong nation!
May God turn that which is lame and weak in you and me to be the material for heretofore unknown excellence, success, and greatness, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
