Leviticus 5:11
“‘If, however, they cannot afford two doves or two young pigeons, they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah of the finest flour for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering.
To be considerate means you take into account the various unique situations that may affect a person from being like others. To be considerate means you give allowance for someone to participate who would not qualify because of situations beyond their ability to control. To be considerate means while officially the person is disqualified yet because of your magnanimity you allow them to participate. To be considerate means you give a listening ear to what should be dismissed without further hearing. To be considerate means you give a second chance to a remorseful person.
In the book of Leviticus, we are told of various offerings that God required Israelites to give. God was specific on what animal would be slaughtered as an offering. God gives details on how the animal should be slaughtered and the process of the entire service. Then in our text today, God places a statement that catches our attention. God addresses those who cannot afford the animals for sacrifice. At this point, we are awed and can only admit that indeed God is considerate!
Leviticus 5: 6 God requires that a sinner brings a female lamb or goat from his flock. The question is, what if the person doesn’t have any flock of sheep and goats? How will they seek forgiveness from God? Are they doomed to perish in sin because they can’t afford the sacrificial animal? Leviticus 5:7 tells us that if they can’t afford the animal they should doves or pigeons. Isn’t that considerate? That if they can’t afford the animal they can bring a specific bird. Indeed God is considerate!
What if the sinner is so poor that even doves and pigeons are beyond their reach? Should they suffer in poverty and die in sin because they couldn’t afford salvation? Should they lack in life until they lack even the means to plead for forgiveness from God? Our text today Leviticus 5:11 tells us that if they can’t afford doves and pigeons, they should the best flour that they have at home. This they can’t lack. Indeed God is considerate!
2 Samuel 24:24
But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I WILL NOT SACRIFICE TO THE LORD MY GOD BURNT OFFERINGS THAT COST ME NOTHING.”
So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of silver for them.
Even the poorest homes have some flour for daily food. God has allowed this flour to be used as a symbol of remorse over sin. A rich person cannot bring flour, doves, or pigeons, that would be too cheap for them to have any meaning in their spiritual walk with God. A rich person brought a sacrifice that costs something. What they can afford and feel that they have made a sacrifice. A sacrifice means you feel the pinch of the cost. Do not give tithes and offerings that lack the sacrificial element. Do not give tithes and offerings that are not related to your capacity. God is considerate of your resource abilities. Indeed God is considerate!
Mark 12:42-44
(42) But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
(43) Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. (44) They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
You cannot compare the cost of sheep or goats offered and some flour brought for the same sin by two different people. The value is not in the market value. The value is in how much that sacrifice means to the giver. The more the sacrifice pinches the higher the sacrifice. That is why Abraham was called upon to give his only begotten son because that is what would pinch him most. It was cheaper for Abraham to give Ishmael, Hagar, Sarah, or all his wealth. God went for what pinches most when given, He asked for Isaac the beloved, Genesis 22:2. The cost of what you give in worship is valued by how much it cost you as an individual. That makes the giving of a million dollars and one dollar the same if it pinches the two givers the same way. Indeed God is considerate!
1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
God is so considerate that He controls what temptations come our way. God knows who can handle which temptation. God knows who can’t handle which temptation. No temptation comes beyond our ability because God is considerate. Even when the temptation we should be able to handle comes, and we fail God by struggling under its weight, God is considerate and creates a situation that allows us to escape the clutches of that temptation. We are alive because God is considerate. Indeed God is considerate!
We have not been faithful as we should be, but we are alive because God is considerate. We should have died in our sins, but we are alive because God is considerate. We do not deserve what we have and where we are, but God is considerate that is why we are here. We are glad that God is indeed considerate.
May we be equally considerate to others as God has been to us. May we live a life that does not abuse the considerateness of God. May we enjoy the considerateness of God even today and now, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
