Exodus 4:14
Then the LORD’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you.
Isn’t it good to know when God is about to get angry so that we avoid that situation of being enemies of God? How can I tell that I am about to face the wrath of God? The Bible tells us that one day in the not-so-far future, God will get so angry with humanity that He will end evangelism and ask everyone to stay where they are. Sinners to remain sinners and the saved to remain among the saved.
Revelation 22:11
Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.”
This is what is referred to in Christian jargon as close of probation. When God stops pleading with people. When God stops convincing us that He offers a better deal than satan and our limited reasoning that we have overrated. When God lets us have our way and face its consequences.
Revelation 20:9
….But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.
God will not only stop negotiating with human beings. God will not only close probation. God will go ahead and destroy the devil, devil’s angels, and all human beings who have refused to accept the gospel. God will burn them with fire that will destroy everything on earth. After the fire destroys everything, God will create a new heaven and a new earth, Revelation 21:1-4.
Our main text today gives us a scenario where God got angry with Moses. This scenario helps us understand the steps it takes towards God getting angry with us. God is slow to anger, Psalm 103:8, but eventually, He gets angry.
Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit but God didn’t kill them instantly. God saw Cain killing Abel and He didn’t kill him instantly. God saw David commit adultery and eventually kill Uriah. God saw David covering it up, but God didn’t kill him instantly. At what point does God get angry?
The story of Moses tells us that he gave an excuse at Exodus 4:1 that Israelites may not believe that God sent him. Moses was avoiding taking up an assignment that God had given him. God knew that Moses was giving lame excuses, but God patiently responded to him and reassured him of His power and presence.
After God had comprehensively responded to Moses, we expect that he will get convinced and take up the assignment. Unfortunately, Moses is still unwilling to go. Moses gives a new excuse that he is not eloquent, Exodus 4:10. God gives a short and powerfully convincing answer.
We hope by now Moses is convinced. Moses is not convinced to take up the assignment but he is convinced that no excuse will work in dissuading God. Moses goes direct to his point and He tells God to send someone else, Exodus 4:13. At this point, the God who is slow to anger eventually gets very angry against Moses.
When God has done everything to persuade us and we remain hardheaded, then very soon He will be angry with us. When God patiently bears with us it will not be that way permanently. Someday if we keep ignoring Him, He will get angry with us.
Is there a bad habit you have nursed for too long? Has God saved you and you keep going back? Be careful you are on a path of God getting angry against you!
God has tolerated your erratic church attendance. God has tolerated you as you terrorize your parents or even spouse. God has tolerated you as you made life difficult for your neighbors and those under you. God has tolerated you successfully scheming to damage others. God has tolerated you as you failed to return tithe and offerings. God has tolerated our prayer-less life and a life without Bible study. But God will not tolerate this forever, He will soon get angry against you!
Dear God, may I never get you angry against me, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
