Amos 3:10-11
(10) “They do not know how to do right, ” declares the LORD,
“who store up in their fortresses
what they have plundered and looted.”
(11) Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says:
“An enemy will overrun your land,
pull down your strongholds
and plunder your fortresses.”
It is a lot of work to create wealth. It is a big struggle to produce wealth. Many sacrifice their health and relationships to create wealth. Some even, unfortunately, sacrifice their relationship with God in order to create wealth. Others sacrifice their reputation to create wealth. However creating wealth is not the end of trouble, the next agenda is how to keep it safe. Is your wealth safe?
Prophet Amos sends a message to Israel. God is not happy because of the conduct of the Israelites. The prophet condemns the sins of the Israelites. In our passage today the prophet focuses on those who have acquired wealth through criminal and corrupt activities. God tells them their wealth is not safe. Is your wealth safe?
Prophet Amos tells the people that God knows where all wealth is stored. God knows that Israelites have secret fortresses where they store wealth they acquired through plundering and looting. God knows where properly acquired wealth is stored. God knows where stolen wealth, corrupted wealth, illegally acquired wealth is stored. God tells them that since He knows where the stolen wealth is, it is not safe. Is your wealth safe?
God tells the corrupt and criminal Israelites that He will allow an enemy to attack Israel. God says the enemy will particularly go for the secret fortresses where stolen and illegally acquired wealth is. The enemy will take all the hidden wealth and leave these corrupt people miserable and poor. God tells them that it doesn’t matter where they hide stolen and illegally acquired wealth, they will lose it to an enemy. Stolen and illegally acquired wealth is not safe. Is your wealth safe?
Take note that God doesn’t declare any threat to properly acquired wealth. Take note that the enemy will not go after properly acquired wealth. Take note that there is implied safety of any wealth that is properly acquired. Is your wealth safe?
We will not live on earth forever? As we spend our time seeking wealth, we must be sensitive that God watches and is concerned about how we acquire our wealth. God, Himself promises to protect properly acquired wealth but to destroy wealth that is illegally acquired. Is your wealth safe?
Mark 8:36
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Wealth is important but it is not everything. We should not sacrifice dignity for wealth. We should not sacrifice family for wealth. We should not sacrifice life for wealth. We should not sacrifice dignity and reputation for wealth. we should not sacrifice our relationship with God for wealth. We will never have enough wealth. Someday we must just stop and say enough is enough. Wealth as a goal is permanently elusive. The thirst for wealth has never been quenched. The enduring temptation in pursuit of wealth is that we may go for illegal sinful options that promise quick and big money. At the end that wealth is never safe. Is your wealth safe?
Dear God, help me in the pursuit of wealth so that I may gain what I am working for. Give me wisdom and courage to stop and be satisfied. save me from greed. Save me from the temptation to acquire wealth illegally. This is my prayer in Jesus’ name, Amen!
