1 Kings 5:12
The LORD gave Solomon wisdom, just as he had promised him. There were peaceful relations between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.
Peace is very important for prosperity in any community. Without peace economic activities cannot take place. Without peace, religious activities are highly limited. Without peace the future is bleak. Without peace, we are all stranded in uncertainty. The question, therefore, is how do we have sustainable peace in the community we live in?
Relationships need peace if they are to achieve the goals that their synergy accords them. Peace in a relationship means you are not careful in an attempt to avoid conflict. Peace in a relationship means you are not on the defensive. Peace in a relationship means you do not live in tension and regret. Peace in a relationship means you consider the other person a worthy partner whom you support and share your goals and plans with. Peace in a relationship means you are a team that faces life together.
Husbands and wives need a peaceful relationship. Teachers and students need a peaceful relationship. Buyers and sellers need a peaceful relationship. Landlords and tenants need a peaceful relationship. Bosses and their juniors need a peaceful relationship. These relationships and many others will achieve much more if they have peace. Without peace, the struggle is great with minimum or no results.
The Bible tells us today in our key scripture reading that God gave Solomon peace just as He had promised. Consequently, Solomon and Hiram had peaceful relations. As a result of that wisdom, Solomon and Hiram entered into a peace treaty. Before the wisdom, David was the king and he was constantly at war with Hiram. When Solomon came in and received wisdom, peace followed naturally. It takes wisdom to live at peace!
It is a lack of wisdom that drives strife. It is a lack of wisdom that foments resentment. It is a lack of wisdom that causes us to focus on finishing each other and not creating prosperity. It is a lack of wisdom that makes us think that fighting each other will bring ultimate peace, it never does. It is a lack of wisdom that makes us entertain gossip and then develop hatred against those we have been told about. It takes wisdom to be at peace!
Luke 14:31
“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
Luke 14:32
If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
It is a lack of wisdom that makes a nation think that military domination will guarantee its prosperity. It is a lack of wisdom that makes governments go to war forgetting that some of their own citizens will pay the ultimate price for what may be an ego trip. It is a lack of wisdom that makes us risk an economy that is fragile by introducing war. It takes wisdom to be at peace!
Romans 12:18
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
The Bible says peace depends on one person in the strife. In the strife between Hiram and Solomon, only Solomon had wisdom. That wisdom was enough to trigger peace. Where there is strife, both parties lack wisdom. A wise person will refuse to get provoked. A fool is provoked by unsubstantiated stories. A fool is provoked on flimsy grounds that would best be ignored. A fool is lured to a duel that would destroy him or her. A wise person refuses to get provoked or lured into traps of an altercation. It takes wisdom to be at peace!
The peace we need requires wisdom on your side only, not even your opponent just you. If you are wise, you will let God fight your battles and let the other persons burn themselves out in a frenzy of provocation. May God grant us wisdom and peace in our relationships, and in our communities, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
