Know How To Answer Everyone
Colossians 4:6 “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”
Communication is key in making or breaking relationships, particularly human. Communication entails passing a message that is understood and receiving a feedback. Communication fails when we are misunderstood or instead of reaching an agreement, a conflict ensues. That is why we are admonished to know how to answer everyone.
A conversation full of grace is a conversation that is influenced by the fact that we have been converted into followers of Christ. The principles of Christianity influence how we pass messages and how we receive them. Full of grace means, completely influenced by our faith in God.
Our faith in God doesn’t allow the principle of an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth. We don’t engage in conversations with revenge attitude. We don’t abuse those who abuse. We don’t insult those who insult. We don’t hurt those who hurt. We don’t embarrass those who embarrass. Because our faith in God is fully influencing us, we quickly forgive. Like Jesus and Stephen while dying, we assume that, those who offend us, don’t know what they are doing. Our faith helps us know how to answer everyone.
Grace refers to undeserved favor. In our conversations we apply undeserved favors to those we converse with. We are polite where they are not. We get the message and ignore the accompanying contempt and offence. We pick the issue in the conversation and deal with it while ignoring the bad attitude. We refuse to escalate the confrontation and deliberately gravitate towards a solution.
Romans 5:20 “The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,” the nature of grace is that it increases in order to out do the offense. If sin increases, Grace increases much more.
If the conversation we have is offensive then a follower of Christ becomes much more gracious to ensure it doesn’t spin out of control. Our conversation has to be full of grace because, communication has become very poor and a source of endless human conflicts. Hence the admonition to know how to answer everyone.
A conversation full of grace also refers to the content of the conversation. The conversation should focus on God’s graciousness. What we converse about influences how we think and approach issues. Our conversation constructs our worldview. Our conversation moulds the framework of our life. For a proper worldview and positive thinking, we need to be keen on what we converse about. Hence the advice that our conversation should be full of grace, a reference to content of our conversation.
When we are positive and having a Christian worldview, we will always know how to answer everyone. We can answer the discouraged, the hostile, the don’t carers, the wise and the foolish. We will know how to answer everyone!
Seasoned with salt refers to having a flavour. A favourable pleasing conversation and response. A likeable conversation. A deliberate move to ensure that the conversation is good and enjoyable. We avoid unprintable conversations and using punctuations that are hostile to faith and must be written with asterix replacing some letters. That deliberateness ensures we know how to answer everyone by adding flavour to all conversations.
When our communication is great, our relationships will be great too and God is pleased. When God is pleased we are blessed. When we are blessed, we prosper in all that we do.
