2 Samuel 9:3 (NIV) – The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”
Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”
Leaders have power. They can make things happen at their word and wish. Leaders are feared because they have power that can harm others. Therefore kind leaders are a rare breed of leaders. God fearing leaders should be kind.
David a great leader remembered to be kind. David a warrior who could kill without being questioned remembered to be kind. Leaders can choose to be kind or not.
David remembered that his enemy Saul who died at war may still have relatives and they could be suffering. David inquired if there was anyone in Saul’s family that he could show kindness.
This was not just any kindness, but God’s kindness. This is the type of kindness that makes leaders great. God’s kindness!
A leader with God’s kindness will show kindness to people he should harm, but chooses not to harm. God’s kindness is shown to people who may not deserve it. God’s kindness is shown to people will never expect it because they have resigned to their fate.
Saul attempted to kill David many times. Saul punished David severely. No one in Saul’s family expected anything good from David. Those remaining in Saul’s family lived in fear that David who had a right to revenge, so to speak, could harm them. Therefore, when David chooses to be kind to them, it is referred to as God’s kindness.
A leader should show God’s kindness to people under him or her. God requires that leaders extend His kindness to the undeserving. This type of kindness is what makes leaders great!
Mephibosheth was lame on both feet due to an accident. Yet the king allowed him to seat at his table daily to eat with him, all the days of his life. This was God’s kindness.
Mephibosheth reminded David of his suffering under Saul his father, yet David allowed the reminder to seat with him daily for all meals for all the days of his life. That means David had forgiven and that memory no longer angered him nor gave him vengeful thoughts. He was a great leader because he had moved on from his pain and chose to be kind. God’s kindness!
Have you moved on from your pain? Have you forgiven those who hurt you? Can you distinguish between those who hurt you and their relatives and friends who may not have hurt you? Holding onto anger and vengeful thoughts doesn’t make you great. A great leader shows God’s kindness.
Jonathan showed David kindness, God’s kindness. When Saul, Jonathan’s father, wanted to kill David, Jonathan helped David to escape. When Jonathan’s father hated David, Jonathan loved David deeply and greatly.
1 Samuel 18:3-4 (NIV) – 3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
Jonathan refused to blindly follow his father’s hatred of David. Jonathan showed David kindness that could only come from God. God’s kindness!
2 Samuel 9:7 (NIV) – “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table. ”
If we show the undeserving people kindness, it will be a blessing to us someday. Jonathan showed David God’s kindness. David showed God’s kindness to Jonathan’s son, long after Jonathan was dead and buried. Will your people in future be treated well on account of your kindness today?
On the other hand we are not kind so that we get it back. David showed kindness and he never got anything back except for God’s blessings. We should not show kindness with an eye to a future reward other than God’s blessings. David showed kindness knowing very well that Saul’s family had no ability at the present or future to return the favor. That is why it is referred to as God’s kindness.
Dear God, help me and help all leaders to show God’s kindness to the people they work with and are under them. May we be remembered for showing God’s kind kindness. In Jesus name, Amen!

Good encouragement to us on how we should do things differently, by showing kindness not because of favors but rather because of God’s Kindness
Amen! God’s kindness
