Isaiah 3:10-11
(10) Tell the righteous it will be well with them,
for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
(11) Woe to the wicked!
Disaster is upon them!
They will be paid back
for what their hands have done.
Isaiah Chapter three tells us of a cursed community. When community members and their leaders join hands in sin and other wrongdoings, they become a cursed community. Eventually, God punishes a cursed community in many ways, including giving them incompetent and oppressive leaders.
It is, therefore, true that all leaders come from God. Good leaders and bad leaders come from God. God allows bad leaders to rule cursed communities. Therefore, bad leaders should not find comfort in Bible texts that declare that leadership comes from God. That does not sanitize them. Bad incompetent leaders are allowed by God to rule cursed communities. Further details on this subject are in our previous article on this site click here.
If a community is cursed, does it mean there are no righteous people in that community? Does it mean everyone is so wicked and deserves the worst from God? A whole community, no one righteous? A whole country? A whole organization? A whole family? If the righteous are there, what happens to them while God is punishing the cursed community?
Our text today tells us that there are righteous people in cursed communities. Not everyone is wicked. Not everyone agrees with the evils done by leaders and community members. Not all leaders in those communities are wicked. But the community is cursed because of the majority of leaders and community members who prefer sinful ways of life.
In our text today, God sends a message to the righteous who are in the cursed community. God tells the prophet who is reporting punishment against the community to also tell righteous that it shall be well. I will punish the wicked but for the righteous, it shall be well.
You may look odd when you don’t join the majority leaders and members in keeping quiet as evil goes on. You may be the lone voice. God says to you in your struggles that it shall be well. You may be under punishment and isolation because you don’t join in evil condoning or doing, God says to you it shall be well. You have looked like a fool or even thought to be a fool because you have not used your position to wrongly hire or to enrich yourself, God says to you that it shall be well.
Tell the righteous that it shall be well. Everyone is cheating in exams except you, God says it shall be well. Everyone is having sex before marriage and outside marriage except you? God says that it shall be well. You can’t date because everyone who shows up wants it to be a sexual relationship, and now you are lonely and seem to be suffering for being right? God says that it shall be well.
1 Kings 19:14
He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
1 Kings 19:15
The LORD said to him, …
1 Kings 19:18
Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”
The greatest temptation of the righteous is to think they are the only righteous people in the cursed community. Elijah the prophet thought he was the only righteous man in Israel. God told him that He had seven thousand others that Elijah didn’t know. Seven thousand righteous people in the cursed community. Do not be tempted to think you are the only one. Just do the right things in humility. Persevere your troubles. Remember God’s message to you – It shall be well!
You live in a cursed community but you can be righteous in that community. Don’t join them. It is okay to look foolish. It is okay to be thought that you are young and rush. It is okay to be thought that you have not matured. It is okay to be thought of as weird and unrealistic. But don’t join them in evil. You may suffer for a while, but God who never fails has promised you that it shall be well. May it be well in the name of Jesus, Amen!
