Deuteronomy 9:7 (NIV) – Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the LORD your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the LORD.
The book of Deuteronomy is a speech by Moses to Israelites. In the section we are focusing on today, Moses tells Israelites to remember what he is about to tell them. Moses asks them to never forget the point he is about to make.
The emphasis, remember and never forget, calls our attention to what he is about to say. Immediately we know that this is important. Therefore, what point does Moses make?
Moses narrates to the Israelites several incidences in which they really annoyed God. The times they really made God angry. Several incidences in which God was so angry with Israelites that He wanted to kill all of them at once!
The problem is the sins Israelites committed. These sins kept annoying God. They were rebellious. Not once and not twice, but many times, they rebelled against God, tried His patience and they almost perished. That was the problem!
Moses tells Israelites that remember and never forget that the problem is your rebellious sins. Defying God. This what killed some Israelites, and this is what almost made God to destroy an entire nation!
We also do well to remember and never forget that rebellious sins can easily take us out. It can cause God to end our existence. God can kill us instantly if we continue in sin. This is the problem, therefore, remember and never forget!
Rebellious sins kept annoying is knowing what you should do and then defying it. Living contrary to what the Bible says. Listening to sermons, teachings, and even reading about what God expects from us, but refusing to comply. This is the problem that may take us out!
The word of God is made clear, but you want to argue and defend your position. Rebellion. You take lightly the word of God, as an opinion you are free to ignore. Rebellion. Moses tells Israelites that remember and never forget that this is what almost destroyed you all!
Rebellion can almost destroy people. Destroy marriage. Destroy employment. Destroy business. Destroy health. Destroy studies. Destroy our relationship with God and others. Some are already destroyed unfortunately. Some may be about to be destroyed. The problem is the sin of rebellion, remember and never forget!
Then Moses goes ahead to give a solution. After explaining the problem, he gives a solution. Biblical prophets of doom, demonstrate the problem, the consequences and the solution.
Any preacher worth their salt, must never stop at the problem and consequences. Scaremongering and fear mongering may be captivating but never our calling. We must offer a solution! Moses offered a solution!
Deuteronomy 9:18-21 (NIV) – 18 Then once again I fell prostrate before the LORD for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the LORD’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the LORD, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me. 20 And the LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.
The solution is prayer. The solution is repentance, a change of heart. The solution is turning around away from evil ways and returning to God.
Moses explains that every time he prayed, pleaded with God and repented, God forgave the Israelites and didn’t destroy them. This is the solution to our problems today. Whatever problems we face, we should first, pray, confess and repent from our rebellion!
Moses tells Israelites that remember and never forget that the solution is prayer of confession and repentance before it’s too late. Our destruction by God maybe due today or tomorrow or in the near future, but if we pray, confess and repent from our rebellious ways, God will save us. Let’s do it before it’s too late! In Jesus name, Amen!
