Deuteronomy 9:1 (NIV) – Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.
Moses has led Israelites for forty years. There dream is about to come true. They are about to cross into the Promised Land. At this point, Moses makes the speech that is in the book of Deuteronomy. Our interest is on what he said in chapter nine of the book.
Moses tells the Israelites that if they were to be compared to Canaanites, the truth will be the people in Canaan are better than them. Moses tells Israelites that these are nations greater than you. They are stronger than you. They have large and best armies. Best equipment.
Nations greater than Israel. Organized government. Effective in offering services to their citizens. Great nations worth learning from. They are better than you when it comes to nationhood.
They are stronger than you. Economically stronger and stable. With gold reserves. With strategic plans that are followed and are detailed for the next many years. These nations are stronger than you economically!
They are stronger than you military. They have modern fighting equipment. They have battle hardened armies. Totally experienced in urban and other wars. They have large armies. They have military allies who can come in their support. Their intelligence collection is top notch. They have deterrence ability. They are stronger than you!
Moses goes on to tell the Israelites that these nations have very secure cities. They have huge and high walls. The infrastructure is defensive and excellent against any attack we can make. These nations are better than us Israelites in every way!
Deuteronomy 9:1 (NIV) – Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.
Moses tells them you are not the best, but you will beat the best. You will win in your contest against the best, but always remember, it’s not because you are the best!
The first piece of news is that even if you are not the best, you can still beat the best. Do not give up or despair. Do not resign to your fate. If you have made a true assessment that you are not the best, you could be right, but that doesn’t mean you can’t win against the best. Keep trusting God keep fighting. You may not be the best, but you will win against the best!
Second piece of news is that if you are the best, do not be so comfortable. You may be surrounded by people you are better than. You may find comfort in mediocrity that surrounds you. You may have intentionally chosen a weak team so that you are secure and irreplaceable. Be warned by the message today. Israel had victory against nations better than them. Israel was weak and inferior but they beat the best!
Under what circumstances can the best be beaten by the inferior? How can the best lose to the not so best? How did Israel dispossess nations greater than them, stronger than them, and better than them?
Deuteronomy 9:3 (NIV) – But be assured today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the LORD has promised you.
God fought the battles of Israel. The better enemies were destroyed by God and not by Israel. God went ahead to clear the enemies and Israel possessed their cities. God is the reason Israel dispossessed nations better and greater than them.
When you partner with God in anything you do, you may remain inferior, but you will gain victories over those who are better than you but have no God. The secret is to be on God’s side. That is how the not so best beats the very best!
You may not be beautiful or handsome, but with God, you will get into serious relationships before the most beautiful and handsome. You may not be the best in business but with God, you can clinch deals of the year better than the best in the market. The not so best can beat the very best!
You may not be the best preacher, but with God, you can spread the gospel better and further than the best preachers. You may not be the best in your field, your colleagues may openly or secretly look down upon you and highlight your weaknesses, but with God, you will go places in your profession that the best in your profession can only dream and wish. The not so best can beat the very best!
May God fight our battles. May God lead the way. May God be our permanent partner. May we remain humble and victorious when we are the best. May we excel in areas we may not be the best, and because of God, may we be better than the best. In Jesus name, Amen!
