Micah 3:4
Then they will cry out to the LORD,
but he will not answer them.
At that time he will hide his face from them
because of the evil they have done.
Micah 3:7
The seers will be ashamed
and the diviners disgraced.
They will all cover their faces
because there is no answer from God. ”
The prophecy of Micah comes to condemn sin and declare hope. Micah condemns the leaders of Israel for unfairly treating God’s people, Micah 3:1-3. Micah tells the leaders of Israel Micah 3:1 that they should treat God’s people well or else God will punish them.
Have you ever wondered what is the worst thing God can do to an obstinately wicked person? Kill them? There should be something worse than even killing them eternally. Micah tells us in our text today that God will go silent on them. God will not answer them nor use them. God’s silence is the worst thing anyone should ever dare experience. Please God don’t do this to me!
Psalms 22:1-2
(1) My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my cries of anguish?
(2) My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, but I find no rest.
The Psalmist cries out that God has forsaken him. How does he know that God has forsaken him? The Psalmist tells us that God’s silence is equivalent to being forsaken by God. He says God seems to be so far that he can’t save him. The psalmist tells us that he can’t find rest in his crying because God does not answer. The psalmist projects God’s silence to be equivalent to rejection by God. Micah tells the leaders of Israel that because of your sins, God will go silent on you. God’s silence is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. Please God don’t do this to me!
Matthew 27:46
About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
The most painful cry by Jesus on the cross was not from the torture or pain of the cross. The most painful cry from Jesus was not because of wounds that were aching. The most painful cry by Jesus was not because he feared death or would miss His family and friends. The most painful cry by Jesus on the cross was because He felt forsaken by God the Father. Being forsaken by God is a very painful experience worse than death. It is evidenced by God’s silence. Please God don’t do this to me!
Isaiah 59:1-2
(1) Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save,
nor his ear too dull to hear.
(2) But your iniquities have separated
you from your God;
your sins have hidden his face from you,
so that he will not hear.
Sin separates us from God. Because of sin, God can’t hear us. Because of sin, God can’t save us. Because of sin, God can’t respond to us. Because of sin, we experience the dreaded silence of God. Micah tells the leaders of Israel that if you persist in sin, God will go silent on you. Please God don’t do this to me!
Micah tells the leaders of Israel that because of your sins against God’s people when you will need God and cry to Him, He will not answer you, Micah 3:4. God tells the religious leaders through Micah, that He will thrust them into the darkness where they will have no visions or divinations, Micah 3:6, God will go silent. Micah says there will be no answer from God. God’s silence will be their worst and everyone’s else nightmare. Please God don’t do this to me!
Times have changed. There is advancement all around us. But human nature that is rebellious to God has not changed. God has not changed. God who went silent during Micah’s time can still go silent in our times. God expects justice and mercy or else without further warning He will go silent on those who defy Him consistently. God’s silence is a terrible thing. Please God don’t do this to me!
What in your life would cause God to go silent on you? What sin have you nursed for too long that you no longer feel guilty when you commit it? Would how you attend or miss worship cause God to go silent on you? Would how you treat people cause God to go silent on you? What in your life would cause God to go silent on you? My prayer to God is just one. Please God don’t do this to me!
Dear God, forgive my sins. Save me from Your silence. May I experience a constant flowing communication with You, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
