Revelation 8:6 (NIV) – Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.
Interpretation of the seven trumpets has proven to be tough for many students of the word. Disagreement comes on details of when and how the trumpets impact the earth in history. However there are common grounds of agreement and from there we will derive God’s word today.
The first general consensus among students of the word, is that the seven trumpets are God’s judgment. A response to the prayers of the saints. God will finally revenge and punish people who have hurt and keep hurting His people.
Within the context of the seven trumpets is a scene in the heavenly Sanctuary where prayers of the Saints are presented before God. After those prayers in Revelation 8:3-5, the trumpets of judgment sound. God will answer every prayer of the Saints. It may delay but the answer will come.
A hurting saint may pray and it may seem heaven is silent. A hurting saint may seem to be on the mercy of the tormentors. But at some point, trumpets will sound and judgment in response will follow. After the silence, justice will be done, the trumpets will sound!
A second agreement on the trumpets is that they happen throughout history. The seven churches are historical events throughout history from ascension of Jesus to when He will return. The seven seals are events throughout history from when Jesus went to heaven to the time when He will return. Therefore, the judgment of the seven trumpets happen throughout history from when Jesus went to heaven until the time when He will return.
The details of exactly when, may be disputed. Which historical event is which trumpet may be disputed. As we prayerfully seek clarity, we dwell on the revealed word in the known. We don’t hang around the unknown or emphasize on our disputed unclear conclusions.
Therefore, the message is that, in response to the prayers of the saints, God will unleash terrifying judgment, throughout history, and eventually at the end of time. God can punish the wicked who hurt His people now, and God will still punish them at the end of time, when Jesus returns. It is happening now, and it will happen in future.
Sinners will be punished throughout history, but also at the end of time. Prayers will be answered throughout history and also at the end of time. Some things will happen now and some things will wait for the end of time. Trumpets of judgment are sounding now, and will have a climax sounding at the end of time.
We suffer punishment for certain sins immediately, while others wait for the end of time. Trumpets sound throughout history and will culminate at the end of time. It is happening now and it will happen in future!
The trumpets vary and the punishment will vary. Some are military in nature. Some are natural disasters. God chooses and decides when and how to met judgment. He may do it now, but the final ultimate is at the end of time!
A third agreement about the trumpets is that they have a relationship to the seven last plagues. There isn’t much disagreement about the seven last plagues. They are found in Revelation 15-16. They are God’s final judgment and punishment against the wicked and the wicked world. After the seven plagues the world comes to an end and we are ushered into eternity.
The trumpets are judgments and punishment throughout history until end of time when the plagues conclude and climax the judgment and punishment process. There is a relationship between the trumpets and the last seven plagues in that sense. An assurance that God will revenge for evils committed against His people. He does it now and He will do it in future!
A fourth consensus is that during the terrible times of God’s judgment, God’s people will be preserved. During the worst and most scary times, God will preserve His people. God’s people are safe throughout history and will be safe at the end of time. It is happening now and it will happen again at the end of time!
May God help us never to forget that answers to our prayers will happen now and some will wait for the end of time. Our salvation from danger happens now and will happen again at the end of time. We are safe in Jesus now and even in eternity. Amen!
