1 Corinthians 6:16 – Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”
Matthew 19:5 – and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
Matthew 19:6 – So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Genesis 2:24 – That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
What does the statement, “The two will become one flesh,” mean? God declared this statement in the book of Genesis while creating marriage. Jesus used the same statement while referring to importance of marriage and responding to questions about divorce. This statement seems to hold some information about marriage that we need to know.
Two becoming one may be a gradual process over time during marriage when two people get used to each other. Two becoming one may be the marital bond that makes two a team that functions as one legally and religiously. Two becoming one could also be a cliche.
Reading Apostle Paul’s letter to Corinthians gives another hint of what it means for two to become one. Apostle Paul tells us that when you have sex with a prostitute, you become one with her, because the Bible says the two shall become one. Sex with a prostitute has no love and may be a one off thing, but Apostle Paul tells us that you still become one with her!
According to that statement by Apostle Paul, two becoming one happens when people engage in sex. Whether the sex has love or not, the two become one. Whether the sex was a business transaction or a friendly fling in an isolated unguarded moment, the two become one. The sexual act itself is enough for the two to be one. That is why the Apostle states that, he who unites with a prostitute becomes one with her, for it is written that the two will become one.
Two becoming one therefore has a sexual meaning. Two married people become one because of their sexual involvement with each other. One sexual act is enough to make the two of you one. If a careless and even forgotten sexual act with a prostitute makes you one with her, what about sex in marriage?
Section 73 of the Kenyan Marriage Act gives grounds for the annulment of marriage. The grounds under which marriage can be terminated. The first on the list is a marriage that has not been consummated since it was celebrated.
Consummation is the process of making marriage complete by having the first sexual intercourse after the marriage is celebrated. Without consummation a marriage can be deemed to have failed to take off legally. Consummation makes marriage along side other factors. Without consummation there is no marriage. The two will not have become one. This is true not only biblically speaking but even legally speaking if the Kenyan law is anything to go by.
Therefore, legally speaking, sex makes marriage where two become one. Biblically speaking sex with anyone makes you one with them. The two becoming one may have many different meanings but one of it is that sex makes two people to be one.
Exodus 20:14 – “You shall not commit adultery.
The ramifications of the short and simple seventh commandment becomes clearer. Committing adultery may come with sexually transmitted infections, but those can be prevented and treated. Adultery may bring unwanted pregnancy but there are ways to prevent it or unfortunately even have an abortion. Adultery will send people to hell but they can repent and avoid hell. But how do you undo the oneness you have become with your partner in adultery?
When divorce takes place even for good reasons (such as saving life from violence ridden marriage), the pain is incomparable, because the two had become one. When single unmarried people end their relationship, those who have had sex (premarital sex), will experience more pain and anguish, because the two had become one. We carry consequences of divorce and break up all the days of our lives.
Divorce and break up after sex, will not send us back to default settings. You don’t go back to who you were before sex. You move on as a tainted new self. Tainted by your former sexual partner. You tainted them and they tainted you. This is because the two had become one.
This is why choice of a marital partner should be prayerful and not rushed. This is why abstinence is superior and is more likely to produce a better relationship. That is why sexual sins is like an own goal, you score against yourself and harm yourself.
Therefore if sex makes two become one, then all sex has strings attached. The attached string is that sexual partner who will taint you for life, and whose life you will taint. To look for a sexual relationship with no strings attached is to look for what God didn’t create.
With this understanding, how tainted are you? Are you multicolored unrecognizable due to many sexual partners tainting you? Are you going into marriage bringing a variety of taint or bringing your original self that God created?
Dear God, save us from the mess we have put ourselves into. Save us from lust. Save us from knowingly or unknowingly becoming one with everyone we bump into. May this revealed wisdom help us to only become one with the right person after marriage and never go out of our marriages. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
