Deuteronomy 2:4-5
(4) Give the people these orders: ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful. (5) Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.
They are weak and you are strong. Under normal circumstances, if you engage in war with them, you will win since you are stronger than them. But God has sent a warning that even though they are weak compared to you, do not provoke them. The weak will win don’t provoke them!
Israelites had stayed in one territory for too long. God told them it’s time to change direction. We stay at a place until God gives instructions that we leave. We may have stayed too long in this situation, but we only leave when God says so. Don’t just leave because you are tired or nothing is happening. Leave when God says so. A man was sick for 38 years beside a pool of healing and nothing was happening. Jesus came and told him to leave the place. That was his day of healing.
We get tired of being in one place, one situation for a long time. We agitate for change because we are tired. No change will come unless God says so. No meaningful change will happen unless God says so. Deuteronomy 2:2-3 God tells Israelites that they have been here too long and it’s time to make changes of direction. Even if you are comfortable in a place in a situation, change if God says so.
You have been in this relationship before marriage for too long, God just appears and says change it. For no clear substantial reason, the relationship ends. Move on because by circumstances God is saying move on. You may be required to make changes when things have been good or bad for too long. Just move as God leads.
God speaks to us to move on in many ways. Circumstances may force us to move and after prayer and all attempts, that becomes the only thing to do. By circumstances, God makes it clear that we must move on. Sometimes God says move on by opportunities that come. Irresistible opportunities that after all assessments are good can be God’s voice to move. Sometimes God says move by killing our interest and appetite of where we are until our only peace is in moving. Whichever way God speaks, once you verify without doubt, just move on!
As Israelites were preparing to move in the direction God gave them, they received Instructions. They were told that they will pass through the territory of nations that fear them. The first being their relatives Edomites sons of Esau. These nations are afraid of you. These nations because of fear are weaker than you. God told them that do not be tempted to provoke them to war because you will not win!
Weak people can be enticing to provoke. You may feel like these are the people you use to teach others a lesson. Sometimes we get some pleasure in exercising our authority and power on the weak. There is the temptation to enjoy some easy victories. God warns all of us who easily get tempted to provoke the weak. God says you will not win!
The reason why you will not win is not that they are secretly stronger and unknown to yourself you are weak, no! Deuteronomy 2:5 tells us we will not win because first, God will not help us in that battle. Secondly, God will help them to resist us or fight us, therefore they will win. The weak will win don’t provoke them!
When we provoke the weak, God changes sides. God leaves us who He made strong and He goes to strengthen the weak. On that basis and reason, we will not win. Do not provoke the weak, you will not win!
This is a message to all of us who are strong in one way or the other. We may be stronger financially. We may be stronger academically. We may be stronger health-wise. We may be stronger physically. We may be stronger socially. We may be stronger politically. We may be stronger because of the offices we presently hold. We may be stronger because of the bigger race or tribe that backs us up. We may be stronger because we have allies in high places. We may be stronger because of our personality, talents, abilities and even looks. God has a message for us. The weak will win don’t provoke them!
Indeed you are stronger and God is with you, but if you provoke the weak, God will abandon you and support them. Do not let your strength deceive you. Do not be tempted to flex your muscles for no good reason on the weak. The message is simple and clear. The weak will win don’t provoke them!
This message is also to the weak, do not live in fear. God is your defense. If you are provoked, do not despair, call on God. God will give victory to the weak if anyone dares to take advantage of them. The weak are safe even in the face of the stronger. Dear weak ones, God is your strength and security. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 when I am weak I am strong!
In your class are you weak or strong? In your neighborhood are you weak or strong? In your family are you weak or strong? Among your relatives are you weak or strong? Remember Gideon was the weakest among his relatives and he emerged strongest by God’s power, Judges 6:15. At your workplace are you weak or strong? In what situation do you find yourself? What are your circumstances? Are you weak or strong? God sends this message to you, take note of it. The weak are not disadvantaged. The strong should not provoke the weak. The weak will win don’t provoke them!
Grant me the grace to be faithful in my weakness or strength. Save me from the temptation to provoke the weak based on flimsy grounds or otherwise. Save me from resigning to my weak state. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
