3 John 1:14
I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.
Peace to you. The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.
Apostle John writes his final letter to the church. He instructs the church on fidelity to the truth. He commends the church for treating leaders well. He also warns them about a man who is misleading the church with his self-centered personality.
Diotrephes is the man he warns against. Demetrius is the man he commends. Then he ends his letter after encouraging them to remain faithful to doing right and avoiding evil.
The closing remarks are what catch our attention today. Why would our all-knowing God allow these closing remarks to be part of the inspired canon? There must be something God wants us to learn. The closing remarks mention three things we all need in addition to our faith in God.
First, he tells the church members that he wishes to see them face to face. That means active networking. Active networking is much better than having contacts of people you never talk to and only reach out when you need something from them. That is using and abusing people. You are less likely to be helped by someone whose contacts you have but never reach out unless you are in need. Active networking is when your networks are your friends. You develop a friendship. When the need arises it is a friend helping a friend. Apostle John ends his letter by asking the church to promote active networking. He hopes to meet them face to face soon.
Secondly, the Apostle wishes the church members peace. Not that they were at war but that there is peace we need even in times of peace. Peace suggesting a calm spirit. Peace implying being certain in uncertain times. Peace that is synonymous with contentment under all circumstances. Peace rendering to the peace of God to us that passes all understanding and guards us from mental wounds. Peace that allows us to focus when everyone else is distracted by the good and bad around us. He wishes the church peace!
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, he says friends are sending them greetings by name. This is genuine friendship. This is not congregation friendship. This is personal friendship. He offers them genuine friends. What a blessing!
May these three things be your portion in life, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
