Luke 7:2 – There a centurion’s servant, whom his master VALUED HIGHLY, was sick and about to die.
Luke 7:4 – When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “THIS MAN DESERVES to have you do this,
Luke 7:5 – because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”
Luke 7:6 – So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I DO NOT DESERVE to have you come under my roof.
A reputation is different from self-assessment. A reputation is what others think about you and would affirm it behind your back. What people say about you when they know you are not listening and you will never know that they said it. Self-assessment mis what you think about yourself.
This is a story of a Centurion. A Roman high ranking military officer. Romans were an occupying force. They had colonized many countries including Israel. The Centurion was here to enforce Roman laws and will. With such an assignment the Israelites would naturally hate any Roman including this Centurion. They would hate him for invading their country and enforcing foreign rule. However, this Centurion was different, he was loved!
The Centurion had a slave or servant that he valued. That servant was sick and almost dying. The Centurion went to Jewish leaders asking them to plead with Jesus to come and heal his critically sick servant.
The Centurion shouldn’t have minded whether the servant lives or dies, because he had plenty of servants and could easily get a replacement. The difference is that HE VALUED this servant. The servant had a good reputation as a valuable man.
The Jewish leaders were supposed to lead the community in many things including loathing this Centurion. The Jewish leaders shouldn’t have cared about the desperate needs of an enemy military officer. Yet the Jewish leaders rushed and pleaded with Jesus to heal the Centurion’s servant. They said the Centurion DESERVES THIS because he was VALUABLE to them. He loved their country and even built a whole Synagogue for them.
The reputation of the servant to his master was that he was VALUABLE. The reputation of the Centurion to the Jewish leaders was that he was VALUABLE and he DESERVES THIS miracle. Isn’t this a reputation worth having? When others say that you are valuable. You deserve good things. This is a reputation worth having!
Jesus accepted to go and heal the servant of the Centurion. When the Centurion heard that Jesus is coming to his house, he sent an urgent message to Jesus not to come. According to the Centurion’s self-assessment, HE DIDN’T DESERVE to have Jesus in his home. What is your self-assessment?
The centurion thought of himself as NOT DESERVING. The reputation of the Centurion was that HE DESERVES. What is your self-assessment and what is your reputation?
Self-assessment should be as honest as possible. Self-assessment shouldn’t be driven by low self esteem. That would be unhealthy. Self assessment should not lead to proud arrogance because that will negatively affect how we perform and relate with others. Self-assessment should be honest enough and leave room for improvement. Does your self assessment leave room for improvement or you falsely think you have attained everything?
Philippians 3:12 – Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
Apostle Paul a very successful and outstanding Apostle had a healthy self assessment. He said to himself and to others that he hasn’t OBTAINED all this. He said to himself and to others that he hasn’t ARRIVED at his goal. As a result of that self assessment, he PRESSES on. Does your self assessment encourage you to press on towards greater success? Or does your self assessment make you complacent?
Acts 9:39 – Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.
When Dorcas also known as Tabitha died, the neighbors went and asked Apostle Peter to raise her from the dead. They pleaded that she DESERVES to live because she was VALUABLE to them. She had helped them greatly. What is your reputation? Are you valuable to anyone?
Dear God, help me to be valuable. May my reputation be that I am valuable. May my self assessment be true and drive me to strive towards greater achievements. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
