Titus 3:3
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.
Titus 3:9
But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
In this short letter from Paul to Titus, we get the concern for the church. Paul tells Titus to properly manage the church. He gives him so many pieces of advice on what to do and what to avoid. Then in our passage today he defines foolishness that should be avoided in church.
Apostle Paul tells Titus that before conversion they were foolish. Their foolishness was characterized by disobedience. There is foolishness in disobedience. If you disobey God you are foolish. If you disobey what the Bible says you are foolish. If you disobey your parents and seniors, you are foolish. Disobedience is never celebrated. Disobedience is foolishness avoid it!
When you disobey those you should obey, you put yourself out of reach and you can’t be helped. It is difficult to work with a disobedient person. In a world where networking is critical, a disobedient person is not a team player and would not be welcome. Disobedience many times is a sign of being full of yourself and unable to be guided or helped. When you are disobedient, no one helps you even when they see you making regrettable mistakes. To be disobedient is to be foolish. Disobedience is foolishness avoid it!
We do not obey people against God’s will. All commands to be obedient have a condition, in the LORD. Obedience should be in the LORD only. If it is not in the LORD, we are free to disobey for the glory of God.
When you are deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures, you are a fool. When all you do is pursue pleasure, you must be doing it at the expense of something else that is productive. It is foolish to live for pleasure alone. Pleasure is addictive and consequently squanders monies. Pleasures come with immorality against God and laziness. In pursuit of pleasures alone we become foolish.
It is foolish to be malicious. Doing things secretly to harm people we perceive as enemies. God has commanded that He is the only one to revenge. We shouldn’t hate one another. Envy is foolishness because we were not created identical so that we are the same and worth comparing.
Engaging in certain arguments is foolish because the arguments are unprofitable and useless. These are the characteristics of foolishness. This is foolishness avoid it!
These characteristics of foolishness are the very things that have kept us backward and unproductive. These are the things that interfere with our blessings and pursuit of success. These are things we need by God’s grace to expel from our lives. This is foolishness avoid it!
Save me from any and every foolishness in Jesus’ name, Amen!
