Romans 6:17 – But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.
Romans 6:18 – You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
The Bible in Romans chapter six tells us that we are all slaves. We are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness. Believers were slaves to sin, but they chose to become slaves to righteousness. Therefore it is correct to conclude that both believers and non-believers are slaves. We are all slaves.
In Romans 1:1 and Titus 1:1, Apostle Paul introduces himself as a slave of Jesus Christ. He is proud to be referred to as a slave of Jesus Christ. If Jesus is his Lord, then he is the slave. He did not find the idea of being a slave being repulsive, since he was a slave of a great Master, Jesus Christ.
The slave serves under a Lord. Who is your Lord. If Jesus is our Lord, then we are His slaves. If we find it difficult or impossible to be His slaves, then it means He is not our Lord.
If Jesus is not our Lord, then we are not His slaves. If we are not the slaves of Jesus, it means we are still slaves to sin and Satan. By rejecting Lordship of Christ we embrace lordship of Satan. By rejecting slavery to Jesus we acknowledge slavery to Satan. Are you a slave? Whose slave are you? Who is your Lord?
A free person has no Lord. A free person is a lord to himself or herself. A free person obeys no one but himself. A free person is the opposite of a slave.
Romans 6:16 – Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey —whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
The chief identifying characteristic of a slave is obedience to the Master. A slave must obey. A slave has no other option than to obey. A slave will obey even if it will cost his or her life.
A slave must obey the master. If you are a slave to sin, you obey sinful lusts. You obey anger and therefore refuse to forgive and instead revenge. You obey desires leading to sin. You obey greed and become corrupt. A slave obeys. What you obediently do reveals your master.
Are you obedient to God’s will? If you are a slave to Jesus, you will not question His word the Bible. If you are a slave of Jesus, you will obey Him even if everyone in your family doesn’t obey Him. Are you acting like a slave?
Act like a slave in obeying Bible teachings. Act like a slave in believing the Bible. Act like a slave in your faith and practice.
Psalms 123:2 – As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the LORD our God,
till he shows us his mercy.
A slave depends on the Master. Act like a slave in your dependence on God. Your prayers should have total dependence on God as its tone and language. Wait on God like a slave waits for a Master. Wait on God until He answers your prayer. A free person will wait briefly then seek help elsewhere, but a slave waits in God to the end. Act like a slave when waiting for answers from God. Act like a slave in your dependence on God.
Job said even if God kills him, he will still trust God, Job 13:15. That is acting like a slave. Daniel 3:16-18 the Hebrew boys told the king that even if God doesn’t save them they will remain faithful to Him. That is acting like a slave.
When we pray that May your will be done, that is acting like a slave. The Masters will is supreme. Act like a slave if you are a true believer. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
