2 Kings 6:30 – When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore his robes. As he went along the wall, the people looked, and they saw that, under his robes, he had a sackcloth on his body.
When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore his clothes—now he was still walking along on the wall—and the people looked [at him], and he had on sackcloth underneath [his royal robe] next to his skin. (Amplified Bible)
Hearing this, the king tore his clothes in dismay, and the people who were close to the wall could see that he was wearing sackcloth under his clothes. (Good News Translation)
A sackcloth was a not so attractive cheap clothing that was worn during times of difficulty. A sackcloth was worn by those in grief as a sign of mourning. A sackcloth was worn to demonstrate to those who see you that you are not happy.
A sackcloth was also worn during times of fasting and prayer. Because it was cheap and not so attractive, it became symbolic with self-denial. A sign of surrender to God. A sign of pleading with God. A sign of waiting on God.
Our text today tells us about the king of Israel whose capital was Samaria. His city Samaria was under siege. Under siege means enemies had surrounded his city and nobody could get in or get out. As a result of the siege resources ran out. There was a shortage of food and water. Life was hard!
As the king walked around Samaria he found women quarreling because they had agreed to eat their children, and one had breached the agreement. The king listened to them and in shock tore off his royal clothes. Tearing clothes was a traditional reaction to bad news.
When the king tore his clothes, people were shocked to realize that underneath he was wearing a sackcloth. Outwardly he had royal clothes. Inwardly he was fasting and praying. Outwardly he was the king people depended on. Inwardly he totally depended on God. Outwardly dressed in royalty people expected him to do something about the siege. Inwardly dressed in sackcloth he was waiting on God to do something about the siege.
Underneath the king had a sackcloth. Underneath the king was anchored in God. Underneath was the power that supported and propped the royalty he wore outwardly. What is underneath your clothes?
Your clothes are what we see outwardly, but if we tore off your clothes, what will we see underneath? Will we see protective charms? Will we see waist beads that enhance your prowess? Will we see body scars and marks telling your history? What is the secret behind who you are? What is underneath your clothes?
If we tore off your clothes of affluence, what will we see? Magic? What will we see as the secret behind your wealth? What is underneath your clothes?
If we tore off your clothes of good health, what will we see? What will we see as the secret behind your good health? What is underneath your clothes?
If we tore off your clothes of academic excellence, what will we see? What is the secret driving your excellence? What is underneath your clothes?
If we tore off your relationship clothes, what will we see? What is the secret behind your beaming smiles and love life? What is underneath your clothes?
The king of Israel had a solid secret relationship with God. The king of Israel had secret constant communion with God. The king of Israel was anchored in God. That is what the sackcloth underneath his clothes meant. What is underneath your clothes?
Matthew 6:1 – “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Matthew 6:4 – so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:6 – But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:18 – so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
The best of what is underneath your clothes should never be known by the public except accidentally as it happened to this king. What you tell people loses its power and effect on you. Keep it secret. keep it between you and God. What is underneath your clothes should remain top secret, between you and God. What is underneath your clothes?
Choose a strong relationship with God to be underneath your clothes. Choose a life of meditation to be underneath your clothes. Choose prayer and fasting to be underneath your clothes. Choose returning of tithes and offerings to be underneath your clothes. Choose a complete trust in God to be underneath your clothes.
May the power of God underneath your clothes drive you to patience and excellence and peace of mind, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
