Matthew 6:25 – “Therefore I tell you, DO NOT WORRY about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
Matthew 6:31 – So DO NOT WORRY, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
Matthew 6:34 – Therefore DO NOT WORRY about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew chapter six has a lot of advice from Jesus to us. Each teaching brief as it may be is a loaded lesson for us. In that collection of many pieces of lessons Jesus spoke a little longer about worrying. Other lessons are a verse or two longer, but this one on worry is ten verses long, Matthew 6:25-34. That is why it is worth our attention today.
Jesus begins the lesson on worrying by saying to His listeners and to us today, do not worry. This is a command that requires immediate action as a response. When soldiers are ordered to shoot, they shoot. Jesus has ordered us, do not worry! What is your response to this command not worry?
Jesus says worry isn’t productive. Worry doesn’t produce food and clothes. Worry doesn’t make money. Therefore don’t waste time worrying. Do not worry!
Worry comes with anxiety that easily disables us from functioning as we should. Worry affects our performance. Worry makes us sick. Worry has nothing positive. That is why Jesus commands us today not to worry. What is your response to this command not worry?
Desiring a good future and working towards it is not worrying. When you are obsessed by something you wish to achieve, that is not worrying. Worry is laden with fear and pessimism. Worry comes with feelings of being helpless. Therefore worry drains a person of energy they would need to attend to the challenges that worry them. That is why Jesus has given a command that we should stop worrying immediately. What is your response to this command not worry?
Worrying means you don’t trust yourself and anyone else responsible to make things right. Worrying means you doubt if God is able and willing to help you. Worrying is refusing to be helped because you don’t trust others to do it and you yourself can’t do it. Worrying becomes self-defeating. That is why Jesus has given a command that we should stop worrying immediately. What is your response to this command not worry?
God is the Pilot. God is the driver. God is in charge. When you worry, you declare that you don’t trust the God who is in control. Therefore when Jesus who is in control tells us, do not worry… What is your response to this command not worry?
If you worry, God steps back and lets you to control the situation. When you stop worrying, God takes control. When the disciples were worried about drowning, Jesus kept on sleeping. When they surrendered their worry to Jesus, He took over and calmed the storm. Do you think you are better off in control, that is why you worry? If you stop worrying, you let God take control. Will you stop worrying?
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Serenity Prayer
May God save us from worry. May God forgive us for worrying. I choose not to worry and let God take control of my life, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
