Song of Songs 6:8 – Sixty queens there may be, and eighty concubines, and virgins beyond number;
Song of Songs 6:9 – but my dove, my perfect one, is unique, the only daughter of her mother, the favorite of the one who bore her. The young women saw her and called her blessed; the queens and concubines praised her. (NIV)
6:8 There’s no one like her on earth,
never has been, never will be.
6:9 She’s a woman beyond compare. My dove is perfection, Pure and innocent as the day she was born, and cradled in joy by her mother. Everyone who came by to see her exclaimed and admired her— All the fathers and mothers, the neighbors and friends, blessed and praised her:(Message Bible)
The Song of Songs is a love ridden book of the Bible. This book of the Bible sometimes expresses love in wordings that make loveless and hypocritical people very uncomfortable. Such people go ahead to wonder if God could inspire such a book.
The Greek pagan worship taught that the body and its needs is evil and a prison to the soul. The Greeks in this dualism philosophy contradicted the Bible by claiming that the soul is pure and the body and its needs are wicked. Desires for love, attention, admiration, sex, etc., were considered wicked. Therefore a book of the Bible expressing intimate admiration is considered uninspired and wicked by Christians practicing syncretism by adopting Greek dualism.
Solid Bible believers totally reject theological dualism, which is a corruption of Christianity by Greek thought. Therefore the body and its needs was created by God and is not wicked. Sin is not in the physical substance but in choices we make to contradict God. Thirst is God made and not wicked. Sexual desire is God made and not wicked. Hunger is God made and not wicked.
Jeremiah 17:9 – The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
The heart / soul that is said to be pure and sinless by Greek dualism practiced by corrupted Christianity, is actually the source of wickedness. Sin generates from there and not from a body assumed to be wicked.
Galatians 5:19-22 – The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality,…But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,….
When Apostle Paul writes about acts of the flesh in contrast to the spirit led, he refers to a concept different from the theology infested by Greek dualism. The flesh is a human life deprived of the Holy Spirit and led by its desire. Flesh is not body minus soul. Flesh is entire life deprived of guidance by the Holy Spirit.
A spirit led life is the totality of the person guided by the Holy Spirit. Therefore this doesn’t divide the person into body and soul as done by corrupted Christianity.
Therefore the book Song of Songs is inspired by God. Therefore expression of intimacy should not be offensive. Therefore sexual desires are not sinful. Therefore admiring your loved one as Song of Songs does is neither sin nor contrary to God’s will. Go and love each other and express desire and admiration for each other!
In our text today, Song of Songs writer tells us that his lover is unique and incomparable. Queens, concubines and virgins will never compare to her. She is better than them all. She is unique. She is different!
In other words, he cannot be tempted by queens in their splendor. He cannot be tempted by concubine’s sexual advances. He can’t be tempted by purity and innocence of virgins. This is because his woman lover is unique and different. She cannot be compared to others.
The value of his love is that she is different. The value of his woman is that attempts to compare her will always fail. She stands out and there is nothing to compare.
If you discover that your value is in being different, what would you do? Would you seek to be like your friends and peers? If your value is in being different, wouldn’t you uphold that distinction?
Your value is in being different from others, how can you want to be like others? Aren’t you engaged in a self defeating activity? The more you are like others the lesser and lower your value is. You value is in being different from others!
What attracted your lover to you, was your distinction from others. Now you want to be like others? Aren’t you making yourself irrelevant?
The remnant church has always been unique and different from other churches. After many years, we now have leaders, preachers, musicians, who want us to be like others. Our Evangelism strategy that won people was in our distinction from them. Now being like them is the new agenda?
We now sing like everyone. Preach topics to make everyone comfortable and happy. Dress like everyone. Date and court like everyone. Cohabit like everyone. Instead of sexual abstinence that made us unique, we now go for protective sex in fornication and adultery, like everyone. Yet what made our Lover attracted to us was that we were different from everyone. Would He still love us?
Song of Songs is a love dialogue between man and woman. It can also be interpreted to be a relationship between Christ and the church, without affecting the interpretation that its human love affair. If this is between Christ and the church, and He says He loves the church because it is different and unique, shouldn’t we maintain that uniqueness?
Are you a distinct unique Christian or you are okay being like others? Are you a distinct unique partner in your relationship or you want to be like others? Are you a distinct unique employee / business person or you want to be like others? Are you a distinct unique student or you want to be like others? Remember, you were loved and chosen because you were distinct and unique!
Dear God keep me distinct and unique, as a believer, spouse, worker, neighbor, parent, etc., Distinct and unique in admirable ways. Distinct and unique in ways that bring You glory. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
