Esther 5:13
But all this gives me no satisfaction as long as I see that Jew Mordecai sitting at the king’s gate.”
Haman hated Jews. Haman hated Mordechai the Jew who sat at the Kings gate. Haman would be very happy and glad in his life if Mordechai was dead. Haman was a friend of the king and he wished to use his position to harm the Jewish people.
Haman goes home after a dinner party with the king and queen. Haman is so excited about the honor that the king and queen have given him. Haman is in good spirits and speaks freely about his life.
Esther 5:10-12
(10) Nevertheless, Haman restrained himself and went home.
Calling together his friends and Zeresh, his wife, (11) Haman boasted to them about his vast wealth, his many sons, and all the ways the king had honored him and how he had elevated him above the other nobles and officials. (12) “And that’s not all,” Haman added. “I’m the only person Queen Esther invited to accompany the king to the banquet she gave. And she has invited me along with the king tomorrow.
Haman gets home and he boasts about his good life. He boasts about his vast wealth. He was a very rich person. He had everything he needed. He even boasts about his sons. His children were good and probably equally successful and established with their own wealth. What more would you want if you are wealthy and your children are also successful?
Haman goes on to boast about his relationship with the king and queen. Haman boasts about his connections to those who are in power. He boasts about his access to the boss. He boasts that unlike others he deals with the boss directly. He is happy that among all officials in the kingdom, he has direct unfettered access to the king. Finally, he is totally excited that the queen invited him for dinner today and tomorrow. Isn’t that a good life?
While Haman seemed to live an ideal life, our text today tells us that he admitted to his friends and relatives that he was not satisfied with all these, Esther 5:13. Haman says he will only be satisfied if Mordechai is no more. He will only be satisfied if Mordechai is dead. he will only be satisfied if Mordechai is humiliated. He will only be satisfied if Mordechai is in pain and suffering.
Nothing will ever satisfy any of us if we wish other people ill. If you wish to harm someone you will never find peace in this world. If the pain of someone else is what gives you joy, God will deny you joy even if you have the highest and best job. No amount of wealth and family success will give you peace if there is a Mordechai in your life who you plan and hope suffers greatly.
If you want to teach someone a lesson, to respect you and fear you, you will never find peace even with vast wealth at your disposal. You will say like Haman, all these do not give me satisfaction. Instead of focusing on your life and enjoying the many blessings God has given you, you will be constantly following your Mordechai seeking an opportunity to harm him or her. Nothing will satisfy you if there is a Mordechai in your life.
The worst part of it all is that God favors Mordechai and unless you repent soon, you will be embarrassed and destroyed while Mordechai rises. The best advice is, to leave Mordechai alone, if he is wrong God will punish him, not you, you are not God.
The deceptive nature of sin is that all of us who are Haman in other people’s lives still think we are the Mordechai who will be favored by God. We need to examine ourselves in all honesty and acknowledge that we are the Haman and not Mordechai. Then seek repentance and reconciliation. The end of Haman is terrible and the sooner we abandon that role the better for our present and future.
Dear God, save me from my Haman tendencies. Forgive me for seeking the destruction of others. Save me from the hate and vengeful spirit of Haman. Dear God, if I am a Mordechai, give me patience and hope, and in your own time, raise me up to your glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
