Genesis 9:22-25 (NIV) – 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked AND TOLD HIS TWO BROTHERS outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, “CURSED BE CANAAN! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. ”
After the flood, Noah got drunk and lay naked in his tent or what we can presently call his bedroom or house. Drunkenness can make a person do regrettable things. He was so drunk that he removed his clothes at a place where people could easily see him. Any of his sons could walk in to check on the father and find him naked and drunk. Alcohol consumption is always regrettable. The other problem with alcohol is addiction. Addiction means you are enslaved to death!
While Noah was drunk and naked, his son Ham the father of Canaan saw him. It is a taboo to see the nakedness of your parents. Ham the son of Noah must have accidentally seen the nakedness of his father.
Genesis 9:20-22 (NIV) – 20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.
He didn’t undress the father. He stumbled on a naked father. What was his mistake? If you are drunk and naked, anybody can see you naked without intending to see you. The problem and his mistake is that he went to share the news with his brothers.
Ham should have immediately covered his father. Ham should have concealed this embarrassment. Ham did not address the problem, instead he gladly spread the news and walked away.
Genesis 9:23 (NIV) – But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.
When Shem and Japheth received the news that their father was drunk and naked, they did what Ham should have done. (1) Cover him immediately and (2) tell nobody. Ham didn’t do this and that is why he was cursed by his father! Cursed for sharing and spreading the news instead of addressing the problem.
Genesis 9:21-22 (NIV) – 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside.
It is also possible that Ham intentionally went to check on a naked father. Noah was in his tent, which is private space. Ham may have gone there intentionally and not accidentally. He wanted to see what could be transpiring. He had no agenda except curiosity to find out what to share. After finding out that the father was naked, he didn’t cover him. He ran out to share the news. For that he was cursed!
1 Peter 4:8 (NIV) – Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Love doesn’t expose sins. Love doesn’t expose spread news of the failures of others. Love doesn’t create videos of others in the wrong, then share and forward. Love doesn’t send scandalous information about others on Social Media. Love privately seeks to solve the problem. Love seeks to win back the sinner. Love covers a multitude of sins.
When you lack love, you hunt and collect mistakes of others. When you lack love you seek to publicize the mistakes of others. You record, share, forward and spread. If you had love you wouldn’t record, share and spread. The Bible says, love covers a multitude of wrong. You haven’t covered it, you lack love.
1 John 4:7-8 (NIV) – 7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
If you lack love to cover a multitude of sins, you do not know God. You are not born of God. You are not born again. You are not heaven bound. You lack love to cover those who are naked in sins.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NIV) – 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 IT DOES NOT DISHONOR OTHERS, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, IT KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS. 6 Love DOES NOT DELIGHT IN EVIL but rejoices with the truth. 7 It ALWAYS PROTECTS, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Where there is love a naked Noah would not be dishonored, but would be protected from embarrassment. Love doesn’t expose sins to embarrass and revenge. Love covers. Love goes secretly to help the person overcome their weaknesses.
Love does not dishonor others. Love doesn’t keep a record of wrongs for future exposure. To keep records of mistakes of others is unchristian and evil. Love is not delighted that others made mistakes. It does not delight in evil. Instead love protects.
If love protects, the church and its members would not be scandalized by church members. Love would protect. Without love we do not know God and we are not heaven bound.
Your conduct on social media can expose who you are. If you love keeping records of the wrongs of others. If you enjoy dishonoring others. If you delight in sharing and forwarding widely. If you do not seek to protect. You are not a child of God. You are committing the sin of Ham. For that sin, Ham was cursed and you may not be spared.
May God save us from dishonoring others. May God save us from sharing, forwarding and discussing the evils of others. May God grant us true love to cover the multitude of sins and help the sinners get saved. In Jesus name, Amen!
