1 Samuel 2:30
“Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever. ’ But now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.
To take something for granted is to assume that something is already given to you when it has not been given. To take something for granted is to think something has been granted to you yet it hasn’t. To take something for granted is to misunderstand the other person and think all is well yet all is not well. To take something for granted is to make an assumption.
When you take something for granted you assume it is all yours and you don’t put effort to acquire it. When eventually you fail to acquire it, we report that the problem is, you took it for granted. When a student takes exam success for granted, they stop working hard, yet they haven’t done the exam. A student who assumes that they will pass without serious studies is taking exam success for granted. The student is operating as if the success has already been granted. That assumption is dangerous.
God made a promise to Eli. God promised Eli the Priest that his family members will be the exclusive priests forever. That was a great promise. God honored Eli by making such a promise to him. Unfortunately, Eli and his family took the promise for granted.
Eli didn’t reprimand his family members when they broke priestly rules. Eli’s children assumed that God’s promise was granted and they will never lose it. They committed adultery. They used worship resources to enrich themselves. They cared less whether God was offended or not because they took God’s promise to them for granted.
Eli and his sons assumed that God cannot reverse his promise. Eli and his sons assumed that the promise would be kept irrespective of their commitment and relationship to God. Simply put, they took God’s promise for granted. Don’t take the promise for granted!
1 Samuel 2:30
“Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever. ’ But now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.
Our text today tells us that God sends a messenger who told Eli and his family that He has revoked His promise. God said He will not keep His promise anymore. God said He will find another family to serve Him as priests. It was too late when Eli and his family discovered that they should not have taken God’s promise for granted. Don’t take the promise for granted!
As you started your studies, your employment, your business, and even your leadership, you asked for prayers and promises from God were read. The promises were and are true, but don’t take them for granted. Remain faithful and focused or else God can change His mind and refuse to fulfill the promise He made. Don’t take the promise for granted!
As you started your relationship, your marriage, and your ministry, you were prayed for, you made commitments and God’s promises were read to you. God has fulfilled some of the promises and He will fulfill many more, be faithful and committed to God, don’t take the promises for granted!
Have you been fasting and praying? Are things getting better as God fulfills His promises? Do not be blinded by success, money, wealth, and power. God who gave them can take them back if you take the promises for granted. Remain committed and faithful. Don’t take the promise for granted!
May God save us from the habit of taking things for granted, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
