Job 8:7 (NIV) – Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.
Job 8:7 (Message Bible) – Even though you’re not much right now, you’ll end up better than ever.
Job 8:7 (New Living Translation) – And though you started with little, you will end with much.
Job 8:7 (English Standard Version) – And though your beginning was small, your latter days will be very great.
Job 8:7 (Amplified Bible) – “Though your beginning was insignificant, Yet your end will greatly increase.
Job 8:7 (Contemporary English Version) – Your future will be brighter by far than your past.
These are the words of Bildad to Job. Bildad is among Job’s closest who came to comfort him. Job lost all wealth and health. Job was in a desperate situation. Things were bad!
Bildad and other friends come and comfort Job. Then they begin a dialogue on why these calamities befell Job. Bildad and friends insist that Job must have committed sin for which he is suffering. They ask Job to repent. Job on the other side insists that he hasn’t committed any sin and his suffering isn’t a punishment.
In the heat of this discussion, Bildad speaks the words of our text today. Probably unbeknown to Bildad he just spoke the truth and made a true prediction. That Job was in a poor situation but prosperity will soon come.
Do you know it’s possible to speak the truth as moved by God, yet you the speaker do not know that you just spoke the truth? Let’s share a few examples of very true statements made by people who may not have known the great truths they just spoke.
John 11:49-50 (NIV) – 49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
Matthew 27:41-42 (NIV) – 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
Acts 16:16-17 (NIV) – 16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.”
The words they spoke are true. It was better Jesus alone dies for us than we all die. That is true and that is what happened, but that is not what he meant. Caiaphas made that statement to convince other leaders that Jesus needs to be killed. It is also true that for Jesus to save us, He couldn’t save Himself. He had to die. When religious leaders mock Him that He saved others and could save Himself its true. But unknown to them they spoke the truth as they mocked.
Bildad in his accusation against Job, made a true prediction of Job’s future. Bildad tells Job, you are at a small insignificant place today, but things will change and the future will be bright and prosperous! It will end well!
Do not despise your humble beginnings today. Do not despise the small start. Do not quickly conclude that things are bad. What looks like a small unattractive beginning will end in a huge glamorous blessing and prosperity! It will end well.
Zechariah 4:10 (NIV) – “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”
God says do not despise what begins as a small thing. Zerubabel started a small construction and people despised it. That small temple became huge. Do not despise a small start. It will end well.
1 Kings 18:44-45 (NIV) – 44 The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’” 45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.
The small insignificant cloud brought a heavy rain. Don’t despise a small cloud in an entire blue sky. That cloud will bring a flood. If you see a small cloud for a start, don’t lose faith. It will end well. The rain you desire will come in excess. Are you seeing a small cloud in you project, health, relationships, studies, etc.? A small cloud that is not even encouraging? Have faith. It will end in a big good way. It will end well!
Start low. Start small. Start insignificantly. If that is all you got, start anyway. The start may be a shameful one because it is the opposite of the desired future, but start anyway. The future will be better than your wildest dreams. Start anyway, it will end well.
Keep working. Keep going. Be faithful. Hang in there. Start and keep going. Do what must be done. Show up and play your part. You may not see much for now. It may be discouraging for now. But hang in there, it will end well.
May God help us in the humble beginnings and struggles of moving on. May we testify that indeed it’s true that what begins humbly will end well. May it end well even today, in Jesus’s name, Amen!
