Nehemiah 1:9
but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’
Nehemiah is a civil servant in Medo-Persia though he is a jew. He receives a report that though permission has been given to rebuilt Jerusalem, the situation is dire and the place is in a sorry state. The news from Jerusalem is so saddening that he weeps about it. He then turns to God and prays.
When you receive bad news this is how to react, Nehemiah 1:4. First, cry if it hurts. Do not mask pain, express pain and disappointment. Secondly, turn to God and pray about it in the most honest way you can express yourself. Do not be so keen on the choice of words or the theology of your prayer, God can handle anything and He knows what you are going through. Nehemiah cries and then prays.
Our text today is part of the prayer he made after crying. He prays to remind God that He promised something. God doesn’t need a reminder, so he was actually reminding himself. He prays that God promised that if the Israelites are so sinful and defiant of God, God will punish them by breaking their nation and scattering them among other nations, Nehemiah 1:8. But God also promised that if they repent, God will bring them from all over the nations and form them into a nation again.
God promised that if they fix their part of the bargain by being obedient then God will fix any situation they face however difficult it may seem. If they repent and obey, God will bring them back from places that nobody believes anyone can come back from. God is therefore saying, fix yours and I will fix anything else that remains or is required. Fix yours and I will fix anything!
If consequences of sin have made our situation hopeless and irreversible, God says, just repent and obey me, and I will reverse the irreversible. No one has gone too far that God cannot save. If you think you have gone too far, just repent and obey God and you will experience that no one has gone too far from salvation. God can fix absolutely anything, He is just waiting for our repentance and obedience. Fix yours and I will fix anything!
How far have you gone from God? He can still restore you. He tells Israelites that it doesn’t matter how far scattered they are, if they repent, it will be His business to bring them back, Nehemiah 1:9. Fix yours and I will fix anything!
Fix your relationship with God and be forgiven. Fix your favorite sins and abandon them. Fix your church attendance and be regular. Fix your Bible study and prayer, make it a routine. God promises that He will fix anything that has gone wrong in our lives. Anything He will fix it. Nothing is too hard, He will fix it. He just expects us to show remorse for sin and a passion for Him, We fix our part and he will fix everything else for us. Fix yours and I will fix anything!
Dear God, expose to me what I need to fix so that you can fix everything else in my life, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
