Genesis 7:1 – The LORD then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.
Genesis 8:15 – Then God said to Noah,
Genesis 8:16 – “Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives.
It is God who told Noah to get inside the Ark. It is God who told Noah when to get out of the Ark. yet Noah was desperate and anxious to get out of the Ark as if it depended on him. Noah did a lot of experiments and desperately sought to know if he could get out of the Ark. He didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
It is God who told him to get into the Ark. Why couldn’t he wait for God to tell him to get out? Why did he struggle too much to establish if he can get out? Why was he desperate and anxious to get out, yet it’s God who told him to get in? He didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
Read the following passages and see how desperate and anxious Noah was to get out of the Ark. Yet in all these acts of desperation he didn’t ask God for guidance. He didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
Genesis 8:6 – After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark
Genesis 8:7 – and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.
Genesis 8:8 – Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.
Genesis 8:9 – But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark.
Genesis 8:10 – He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark.
Genesis 8:11 – When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.
Genesis 8:12 – He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.
Noah was desperate and anxious to get out of the Ark. He wanted to determine if it is safe for him to get out. How can he determine when to get out when it is God who determined when to get in? Why didn’t he ask God? He didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
He sent a raven to check if the flood waters had receded. He sent a dove several times. He had days of waiting in-between. He wasn’t at peace. He desperately wanted to know if it’s now safe to get out. He didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
At the end non of Noah’s efforts determined when to get out. The same God who told him to get into the Ark, is the same God who told him to get out. All his acts of sending a raven and doves wasn’t useful in determining when to get out of the Ark. He was desperate for nothing. He was anxious for nothing. He didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
God told Abraham that He will give him a child. Abraham and Sarah decided to use the househelp Hagar to get a child. They were desperate and anxious to have the child that God promised. That became a grave mistake. They didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
Jesus told disciples that let us cross over the lake. Then Jesus fell asleep in the boat. A storm came and they struggled by themselves. They even thought they will die. They took long to call on Jesus. Eventually when they asked Jesus for help, He instantly calmed the storm. They didn’t have to suffer all the struggles that they had suffered. They forgot it’s Jesus who told them to cross the lake. They suffered desperation and anxiety for nothing. They didn’t have to be desperate and anxious- neither do we!
You prayed and got admitted to that school. God allowed you to get into that school. You have done your best. Why are you desperate and anxious about school fees and performance?
You prayed and got the job. God knows you are in that position. God is still in control. Why are you desperate and anxious about performance and someone taking your job?
You prayed and got into that relationship and or marriage. God is still in control. Why are you desperate and anxious about this relationship or marriage?
You have lived a faithful life. Your health gets shaky a little bit. God is still in control. Why are you desperate and anxious about your health?
We are saved by faith. Why are you trying to get divine favors by punishing yourself with a hard life? Why do you live and speak with uncertainty about your salvation as if it depends on you? Why are you desperate and anxious?
“O what peace we often forfeit
O what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer”
May God save us from desperation and anxiety. May God help us to trust Him and His timing. May God remind us to seek His help in desperate and anxious times. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
