John 2:23-25
(23) Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. (24) But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. (25) He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.
Jesus had performed His first miracle by turning water into wine for a wedding in Cana. After that Jesus had gone to Jerusalem during Passover when it’s most crowded with people from all over the world. While at Jerusalem, Jesus cleansed the temple by kicking out traders who shouldn’t have been there. News about Jesus took Jerusalem by storm. A huge crowd followed Jesus.
Jesus performed many miracles during this most crowded season of Jerusalem. Many people believed in Jesus and followed Him. Many people were pledging allegiance to Jesus and Jesus alone. How should Jesus react to this success?
We expect Jesus to be excited as He welcomes this success. We expect Jesus to embrace these new followers wholeheartedly as they seem to validate His ministry. But Jesus doesn’t do that. Jesus acts cautiously and doesn’t fully buy into this excitement that wouldn’t last for long.
The Bible tells us in our text today that Jesus didn’t buy into their sudden allegiance and love. The Bible tells us that Jesus knows human beings so well. Jesus did not need anyone to tell Him about human beings. Jesus knew that one moment people love you and the next moment they hate you and kill you. Jesus knew that those who praise you can lynch you.
Jesus was cautious. Jesus knew that whoever swears to love you today can kill you tomorrow. Jesus was cautious because He knew that one you risk your life to help today will abandon you at your hour of need tomorrow. Jesus knew the one you feed as they starve, will starve you to death, tomorrow. Jesus was cautious the Bible tells. If Jesus was cautious what about me?
Jesus was cautious when dealing with an excited group of people who love and support you. Jesus would not believe any business deal that looks straightforward profit. Jesus would not believe any advert or email that promises a quick life overhaul. Jesus was cautious when dealing with people with positive promises and excitement. Jesus wouldn’t believe any media story being forwarded around even if it seemed to support His ministry. Jesus was cautious when dealing with people, what about you? What about me?
Jesus would have been cautious about lending someone money who will return it next week because as usual they never return it. Jesus would be cautious about someone who promises to return a favor because normally they don’t. Jesus would be cautious about expressing allegiance for a human being whose power and position are transient and will not be there forever to favor. Jesus knew human beings and He traded cautiously. If Jesus was cautious, what about you and me?
Are you cautious in your love life? Are you cautious in how you use money? Are you cautious in your friendship? Are you cautious as you open up to people who seem friendly but could be spies for those who are seeking an opportunity to destroy you? Are you cautious in your dealings with people? If Jesus was cautious what about you and me?
Micah 7:5
Do not trust a neighbor;
put no confidence in a friend.
Even with the woman who lies in your embrace
guard the words of your lips.
Are you cautious enough when dealing with people? Lack of caution is unacceptable foolishness for a believer. May God make us cautious as we deal with good supportive friendly and promising people. Give us wisdom dear God, make us cautious when dealing with people, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
