Joshua 4:22
tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’
Joshua 4:23
For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.
Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground. This is a loaded statement. Do not take it lightly. The implications of that statement are far-reaching. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
When Israel left Egypt, they crossed the Red Sea on dry ground because God parted the waters. Those who saw that miracle were later on rebellious and they perished in the desert before crossing the Jordan into Canaan the Promised Land. Their children now under the leadership of Joshua are crossing the Jordan river when it is flooded and dangerous, Joshua 3:15 and Joshua 4:18. God stops the river so that Israel can pass. God asks Joshua to take twelve stones and construct an Altar at Gilgal, Joshua 4:20. If anyone and particularly their children ask them what this altar at Gilgal is all about, they are to respond using the words of the title of this message today. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
To cross the Jordan by any means was dangerous. To cross it during its flooding stage as God commanded them to do was actually suicidal. Therefore crossing by swimming, boat ride, or otherwise was worth a permanent memory. Now to cross the Jordan on the dry ground during its flooding stage was impossible humanly speaking. To therefore declare that Israelites crossed the Jordan on dry ground, is to declare that the impossible happened. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
God asks the Israelites to always remind themselves that this impossibility happened. God asks them to set up a memorial site at Gilgal so that whenever they think of this impossibility happening, they worship God. Teach your children and let everybody know that God did the impossible for His people. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
Never forget the impossibilities that God has made possible. Never forget that because of God you are where you never thought it would be possible for you to be. Never forget to read God’s word. Never forget to pray without ceasing. Never forget the many possible things now that were once impossible. God who did it is still the God who will do it. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground! It was an impossibility but God made it possible. After losing business and/or employment God still provided for you and you lacked nothing. That is akin to Israel crossing the Jordan on dry ground. You were single, not physically good looking, withdrawn, and laid back, but God surprised you and gave you a relationship or marriage, yet the better looking and outgoing are still single in spite of their higher ratings in social life. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
You expected a low grade but you passed. You should have died in that accident but you left unharmed. The impossible happened by God’s grace. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
Decisions were made to harm you, but you never got harmed. You were surrounded by enemies with ill intentions every step of the way, but you kept thriving. You were not the best but you got the job. The disease would have killed you but for some strange unknown reason called God’s grace, you are still alive and kicking. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
The income was already insufficient. Giving tithes made it much smaller. Giving offerings in addition to tithe as it is supposed to be, made the smaller smallest. Yet with the smallest insufficient income, you have sailed through life lacking nothing. Impossibilities keep happening to you, for you, and around you, all in your favor. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
My entire life is a testimony to the truthfulness of this statement, that the impossible happened. That Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground. My upbringing. My studies. My salvation from bad behavior and mischief. My employment. My surviving attempts against my life and employment. My marriage. My parenting. My ministry. When I look back at all these, indeed the impossible has happened and I am here today to the glory of God. Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground!
Dear God, thank you for making the impossible to be possible in my favor, may it remain so all the days of my life, and may I remain faithful to you in Jesus’ name, Amen!
