Acts 2:24
But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
New Living Translation
…, for death could not keep him in its grip.
Amplified Bible
…, since it was impossible for Him to be held in death’s power.
Good News Translation
…, because it was impossible that death should hold him prisoner.
This is the day of Pentecost. The Spirit of God has empowered the disciples to speak in tongues. The tongues are not unknown languages as it is practiced today. The tongues they spoke were known and could be understood by native speakers.
Acts 2:6
When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
The speaking in tongues was not understood only by special people, no! Even passersby who were not Christians could understand the language that was being spoken because it was their native language. The list of existing languages that they spoke is also listed in the Bible, Acts 2:8-11.
Speaking unknown languages is not a biblical tradition. The few times speaking in tongues is mentioned in scriptures it refers to speaking known existing languages. The only reference to speaking an unknown language is in 1 Corinthians 14 where it is condemned by Paul. The practice of speaking unknown languages masquerading as speaking in tongues began in Corinth. The Apostle condemns it in 1 Corinthians 14. Otherwise, speaking in tongues according to the Bible is to speak existing languages,
During this day of Pentecost, a crowd gathers to listen to the speaking in tongues. Some wonder what this means. Others rush to a conclusion that the disciples are drunk. Peter steps in to clarify that this is a fulfillment of prophecy. Then Peter preaches a powerful sermon. Our text today is a section of that sermon.
In our text today, Peter tells them of Jesus who came, died and was resurrected. Peter tells the crowd that Jesus was resurrected from the dead because of two serious reasons. First, God raised Him from the dead. Secondly, death was unable to hold Him or keep Him. It couldn’t keep Him it can’t keep us!
God who raised Jesus from the dead has also promised to raise from the dead those who die in Jesus. Death doesn’t usher anyone to heaven or hell. You stay in your grave until resurrection day. God will raise dead believers from the dead. For that reason, death couldn’t keep Him. It couldn’t keep Him it can’t keep us!
Acts 2:29
“Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.
Peter speaks of David who died and he doesn’t suggest that David is in heaven. David died and was buried and the grave is still available. David will be resurrected by God who raised Jesus from the dead. Even death that couldn’t keep Jesus, can’t keep David. It couldn’t keep Him it can’t keep us!
Peter says, while death has a grip, it couldn’t keep Jesus. While death has the power it couldn’t keep Jesus. It couldn’t keep Him it can’t keep us!
Our greatest fear is the fear of death. If you can overcome the fear of death, you are set free. Death can’t hold you. It couldn’t keep Him it can’t keep us!
May God help us to enjoy life without fear of death. Physical death. Financial death. Academic death. Social death. Psychological death. Whatever death we face, may we be reminded that it couldn’t keep Him and it can’t keep us, in Jesus’ name, Amen!
