1 Chronicles 6:31 – These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the LORD after the ark came to rest there.
1 Chronicles 6:32 – They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem. They performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them.
6:31 These are the persons David appointed to lead the singing in the house of God after the Chest was placed there.
6:32 They were the ministers of music in the place of worship, which was the Tent of Meeting until Solomon built The Temple of God in Jerusalem. As they carried out their work, they followed the instructions given to them.
Regulations are boundaries that should not be crossed. Regulations determine what you can do and what you can’t do. Regulations are limitations placed on freedom of those involved. Where there are regulations you do what is expected and not what you want.
Should music which is a creative art have regulations? Should we limit what musicians can do and not do? Should there be regulations on what can be presented as music?
Well we can place limits on secular music. Some secular music can praises crime and others vices, they need to be regulated. Some musicians can promote anti social behavior and offend certain beliefs or people, for sure they need to be regulated. What about religious music?
King David chose temple musicians. They were to lead in music during worship. They were religious ministers of music. Their job was clearly limited to religious music. Isn’t that enough regulation? Isn’t it enough to tell them that they are religious musicians? Do we need further regulation?
The Bible tells us in our text today that they had regulations. The temple musicians had regulations. They performed according to laid down regulations.
They did not let their creativity run wild. Their creativity was subject to regulation. They did not play any beats, they had to operate within regulations. They did not sway anyhow to the music, they had regulations that limited them.
They did not put lyrics together and anything that sounded religious, no, they were regulated on what to sing. Their uniform during performances was regulated by reverence and not necessarily fashion. The music was regulated.
There was even regulation on who could sing and could not. It was not free for all. There was regulation. The music and the musicians had to work within the regulations.
Regulations were designed to mould and shape the music to achieve a specific spiritual end in worshippers. Deviation from regulations could easily shift agenda to entertainment. There was need for regulation.
Regulations on music ensured that focus remained on God not the experts playing instruments and not the gifted voices. Regulations ensured that God was the priority and only topic in worship. Without regulations we would easily celebrate the people involved and and forget the God being worshipped.
More interesting is the fact that they did not develop the regulations themselves. You cannot regulate yourself, that is folly. Another body regulated them. The regulations were laid down for them. This helped regulate their pride and forced them to be led in humility.
Are musicians obedient to regulations from the church? When musicians become popular and great, can they be regulated by other leaders, or it would seem like the leaders are jealous? Can religious musicians accept to operate within regulations laid down for them?
God has regulated us in many ways. Is regulation of religious music an Old Testament thing or good for all time? Would the music ministry be much more effective and influential if it was within the regulations?
King David May have regulated them on prompt music practice attendance. They probably had regulations on what to eat and what not to eat, in order to optimize their health and voices. They may have had regulations on obedience to the trainer. Would such regulations ruin the music ministry or make it better? Should music and musicians be regulated?
For optimum performance regulations are necessary. Regulate the music. Regulate the lyrics. Regulate the musicians. Regulate everything and everyone for best performance!
Dear God help us who minister to operate within the laid down regulations. May the music ministry and all other ministries that stick to laid down procedures serve God excellently beyond expectations, in Jesus’s name, Amen!

Slowly slowly secular music is getting in our churches today, such that people have neglected the message but will always enjoy the tune and instruments played, you realize songs have become part of income and people are struggling to win customers than to spread the gospel, what’s the effect of this and how can it be controlled?
