1 Timothy 6:6 – But godliness with contentment is great gain.
I strongly believe that happiness is the goal of life. We do everything because the end result is that we will be happy. Knowingly or unknowingly we pursue happiness. We may define it differently and give it different names but it’s all about happiness.
In the pursuit of happiness we set many goals. In the pursuit of happiness we develop anxiety and stress as we strive to make it. In the pursuit of happiness we sometimes get what we wanted then we suddenly discover that it is not as satisfying as we thought.
Even when we achieve our goals in the pursuit of happiness, happiness itself becomes elusive. We thought academic achievements are equal to happiness. Indeed we were happy on graduation day. However many days later, we have the certificates but the happiness is gone. It was short lived.
What is true about education achievements is true about many other goals. Goals to get a job. Goal to rise higher. Goal to marry. Goal to have children. Goals to excel in this or that. The day the goal is achieved is a happy day. Many days later we set new goals because happiness has sneaked away. Can we have lasting happiness?
Apostle Paul writes from prison in Rome to Timothy the pastor of Ephesus. In the section we are focusing on today, he addresses the pursuit of lucre, money, and material things. He helps us through the Holy Spirit’s inspiration to know that only contentment matters. This is the one thing we should pray for and happiness will be our portion.
1 Timothy 6:6 – But godliness with CONTENTMENT is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:7 – For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
1 Timothy 6:8 – But if we have food and clothing, we will be CONTENT with that.
1 Timothy 6:9 – Those who WANT TO GET RICH fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
1 Timothy 6:10 – For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, EAGER FOR MONEY, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Contentment is being okay with what you have where you are. Contentment is when you are not distracted by what you lack or are pursuing. Contentment is a state of the mind and life where your happiness is not affected by what you have or lack, or by where you are or are not.
Contentment is a deep seated gratefulness about what you are so far however good or bad. When you are critically ill and you are glad you didn’t die yesterday and for that you are very grateful and making the best of today – then you are contented. Contentment doesn’t refuse to focus on the future, no, instead it appreciates today while working on tomorrow without being distracted by what is desired.
Contentment is looking at loss and smiling because you believe it could have been worse. Contentment is refusing to give up on account of what is already past. Contentment is refusal to be held hostage by the bad and good that has already happened, and instead enjoying today, in spite of yesterday.
You can be contented as a philosophical conclusion. But if you add godliness the gain is greater. Be contented and religiously active. As an active believer, pray for contentment and happiness will be your portion.
Godliness regulates contentment. Otherwise you can easily find contentment in evil activities. You can find contentment in selfishness. You can find contentment in what is sinful. That is why the Bible tells us that, it’s godliness first, added to contentment that will bring great gain. Our contentment should be regulated by dictates of faith!
Our survival requires very little. Just good and clothing. Whatever else we pursue is extra and excess. Whether we get the rest or not, our happiness wouldn’t change much. We should be content that we have the bare minimum. Contentment is what we should pray for and we will be truly happy!
Someone has said, we spent half our lives making money we don’t need, then we spent the remaining half of our lives treating diseases we got while making that money, using all that money we made. Having lots of money is a good thing if it doesn’t cost our lives to get it. Having lots of money is a good thing if we are content and not restlessly seeking more.
Without contentment no achievement will ever satisfy us. Without contentment everyday seems like a wasted day. Without contentment we will fear to even retire. Without contentment we overwork and over worry. Without contentment, we die tired and unhappy. Contentment is what we should pray for and we will be truly happy!
The love of money is the root of all evil. In other words the lack of contentment is the root of all evil. Lack of contentment will cause you to overwork to death. Lack of contentment will cause you to hate those who have done better than you. Lack of contentment will tempt you to attempt illegal, criminal means to get what you think will make you happy. Lack of contentment may cause you to give up on God. Contentment is what we should pray for and we will be truly happy!
Dear God, grant us contentment in everything. Grant us contentment today. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
