She Knew Why and What, But Most Importantly How

Esther 7:2 – and as they were drinking wine on the second day, the king again asked, “Queen Esther, what is your petition? It will be given you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be granted. ”

Why explains the reasons driving your actions. What explains the steps you are expected to take. What to do. How explains the method to be used. She knew why and what, but most importantly how.

Esther was a Jew who luckily became a Queen. She received news that the King’s Chief servant by the name Haman had planned to kill Jewish people. The plan was so advanced that the king had approved it unknowingly.

The Jews led by Mordecai her Cousin and guardian, had petitioned her to intervene and plead for mercy from the king. She was to do everything to save lives of her Jewish people. Whatever she did from this point on was her Why.

She called for a fast among all Jewish people. Why did she call a fast? Her why was to save lives of Jewish people. The Why that guided her was very clear, save her people from the king’s decree inspired by Haman. You must begin with why. Have a clear reason. She had clear reasons!

Next thing was what should she do to save their lives. Fasting was one of the things she did. It was a what. A what to do. If you know why you should act, the next things is what to do.

Esther organized for a Banquet for the king and Haman. A Banquet was to create an opportunity for her to make her request for lives of Jews to be spared. The why was to save lives. The what was a fast to seek divine help and a banquet to give an opportunity for her to express her request. She knew why and she knew what.

Do you know the why and What? That is a good step in the right direction. Knowing why you must act. Knowing what your actions will entail is a progress we make towards certain success.

Esther organized two banquets. Our text today is on the second banquet. It was during the second banquet that Esther made her request and the king favorably granted it. The king went further ahead and killed Haman by hanging him to death on the same hanging apparatus that he had planned to hang Mordecai on. Esther won the day and lives of all Jews were spared.

Why did Esther organize two banquets? She did so to win the heart of the king and gain victory over Haman. She knew why to act. She knew what to do, but she also organized an effective how. Her how was two great banquets.

Knowing what to do and why you are doing it is good but not enough. We also need to know how to do it. A whole project can be lost if we don’t know how to go about it. You know what to do and why, but have you thought of an effective way of how to do it!

Ephesians 4:15 – Instead, SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

What should we speak, teach, and preach? The truth or the God-given gospel. Why should we speak, teach, and preach the truth? Because God has commanded us to do so. How should we speak, teach, and preach the truth? We should do it in a loving way.

Take note that it is not enough to know what to do. You also need to know why you have to do it. Equally important you should know how to do it. If you get any of these three wrong, you fail in everything completely.

Matthew 18:15 – “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.

Matthew 18:16 – But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’

Matthew 18:17 – If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

What? How to deal with sin that someone has committed publicly or against you. Why? God wants every sin brought to a point where they see their mistakes and seek forgiveness. How? Start privately. Don’t attack publicly. Don’t expose on social media. Finish it privately. If it doesn’t work, get a second person to help in that privacy. If that too doesn’t work, let the church deal with the matter and end it. There is no single place for posting whatever issue on social media.

The how is so important. A person on the wrong easily goes into self-defense. Self-preservation instincts cause a person to be difficult when they are on the wrong and public opinion may go against them. Jesus therefore gave a how to do it, that will give a high probability of success. We must follow the how that Jesus gave!

When you disagree with anyone, you will normally feel right because of the what happened and why you think you are right. The biggest challenge is the how. How you go about dealing with the other person. Sometimes because we are right on what and why, we become careless on how.

We quickly share on social media and among sympathizers the what and why. Remember when you fail on how, you have failed as a believer, even if you were right on what and why.

You were offended at work, but how did you respond? You were not treated well in school, but how did you address it. Your neighbors are bad. Your parents don’t love you. Your children are the worst ever. Your spouse deserves nobody. Your boss should rot in hell. These is all based on facts on what happened and why you are on the right. But HOW have you conducted yourself in these matters? Did how you conducted yourself give the relationships a chance or made things worse? How you reacted and conducted yourself that you don’t talk about, is as important as what and why that you insist proves you are on the right.

May God helps us to keep in mind that all the three must be well done for success and God’s favor to be ours. We should focus on being right in all the three, the why to do or say, the what to do or say, and finally how to do or say. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
