The Scars Will Have A New Meaning

Isaiah 6:13 – And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stump when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.” (NIV)

6:13  And even if some should survive, say a tenth, the devastation will start up again. The country will look like pine and oak forest with every tree cut down— Every tree a stump, a huge field of stumps. But there’s a holy seed in those stumps.” (Message Bible)

Even if one person out of ten remains in the land, he too will be destroyed; he will be like the stump of an oak tree that has been cut down.” (The stump represents a new beginning for God’s people.) (Good News Translation)

God tells Isaiah to prophesy, to preach to the Israelites. God’s message is that the Israelites have been preached to many times but they refuse to listen and understand. Consequently they will be punished by being sent out of their cities and all homes. They will be punished for ignoring God. They will be punished by being taken captive by the enemy. Those who survive captivity will be killed.

There is a consequence for ignoring God’s word that is preached and that we read. There is a consequence for refusing to repent. There is a consequence for refusing to get baptized or re-baptized. There is a consequence for refusing to attend worship. There is a consequence for attending worship as a routine and taking nothing in it seriously.

Isaiah tells the people that punishment is coming as a consequence of their incorrigible bad behavior in responding to things to do with God. Isaiah tells the people that Israel which looks like a forest of people will be cut down and only tree stumps will remain. Tree stumps will dot the landscape of the holy land.

Tree stumps are scars of a flourishing tree that has been cut down. Tree stumps are scars of painful memories of what happened to a tree that was once great. Israel will have scars of God’s painful punishment.

Isaiah is known as the prophet of hope, unlike Jeremiah and Ezekiel who are prophets of doom. Isaiah has prophesied doom of Israel being left with scars. Yet Isaiah doesn’t end his preaching with doom. He ends by telling the people that God will turn their scars into a genesis of hope. The scars will have a new meaning.

The tree stumps which are scars will germinate and a holy seed will grow. The tree was cut because the holy seed was corrupt and no longer holy. The scar that the stump is, that reminds us that this had become unholy and wicked, will be the genesis of a holy seed. The scars will have a new meaning.

The scars of hopelessness will be the genesis of hope. The scars of painful memories will be the genesis of joy. The scars where it ended is where something better will begin. The scars will have a new meaning.

The scars of our life that are memories of pain will have a new meaning. Scars of pain in our lives will become a testimony of God’s grace. The scars we now have will have a new meaning.

The scar of rejection will be the very point at which you will be accepted. The scar of losses will be the point at which interest and profit will be made. The scars will have a new meaning.

The most painful date in your life will be turned into a date of gladness. The most scary occurrence will be the start of unstoppable courage. Your ugly story will be the story that you are now proud of because of God’s grace. The scars will have a new meaning!

The scars of divorce. The scars of rape. The scars of loss. The scars of failure. The scars of rejection. The scars of accidents. The scars of domestic violence. The scars of imprisonment. The scars of shame and embarrassment. The scars of whatever nature are your tree stumps and God promises that from them a new holy seed will germinate. The scars will have a new meaning.

Do not give up because you are full of scars. May God’s grace turn our deserved or undeserved scars into a blessing as soon as possible. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
