Judges 8:4 – Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it.
Judges 8:5 – He said to the men of Sukkoth, “Give my troops some bread; they are worn out, and I am still pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”
God guaranteed Gideon that he will defeat all the armies that were gathered against Israelites. God helped Gideon to choose only three hundred people to help him fight. Indeed as the battle begun the three hundred men of Gideon scared and chased away thousands of enemy troops.
It sounds easy and nice. Gideon and his three hundred men surprise the enemy. God causes the enemy to fear. God causes the enemies to fight against each other. Gideon and his three hundred soldiers witness God given victory.
After a good number of enemy soldiers kill each other, the remaining take off to run for their dear lives. Gideon and his three hundred men pursue them. They run after them as they kill some of them. In the end Gideon and his three hundred men are victorious.
The victory that God guaranteed has been achieved. Reading the story hundreds of years later makes it look so easy. However the text today gives a hint of that struggle. As Gideon and his three hundred men pursued the enemy they got tired. They were exhausted, they were worn out.
When God leads us, the success is guaranteed but the struggle must be there. God guarantees victory but the process is still long, tedious and tiresome. Victory will come but the struggle will be unavoidable.
Judges 8:6 – But the officials of Sukkoth said, “Do you already have the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna in your possession? Why should we give bread to your troops?”
Judges 8:7 – Then Gideon replied, “Just for that, when the LORD has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.”
Gideon with his fatigued troops were fighting God’s war. They were serving God but they were tired. They were helping Israelites to fight their enemies. But when Gideon and his men asked for bread and water from the people they were helping, they were denied that basic need. A very discouraging moment.
Serving God comes with guaranteed success but discouragement is unavoidable. God is leading yes, but discouraging moments will come. God has assured us that we will succeed but moments of discouragement will come. When discouraging moments come, it’s not the absence of God, nor does it mean God won’t keep His promise.
Did you pray at the beginning but now you are dealing with discouraging moments? God hasn’t changed His mind, you will still win. Do not succumb to discouragement, victory is ahead of you, keep going!
John 21:6 – He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
God gave the fish but it wasn’t easy to lift it out. Success is guaranteed but you can get exhausted in the process. Success is guaranteed but you may meet discouragement. In spite of all these, God will keep His word, victory is guaranteed!
The path to victory requires hard work that brings fatigue, even when God has promised victory. The path to victory has many discouraging encounters, even when God has promised victory. May we eventually be victorious. In Jesus’s name, Amen!
